WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones Season 6, if you’re not up to date on the latest goings on in the land of Westeros, then turn around and head back to the previous page before an army of white walkers unleash their fury on you.
Yesterday HBO confirmed that the upcoming season finale of Game of Thrones will be the longest episode yet, running at a whopping 69 minutes! This will no doubt be great news for fans of the series, many of who took to social media to complain about the shortened length of recent episodes. On top of this exciting news, HBO further confirmed that the season finale will be entitled “The Winds of Winter”. Sound familiar? It should, “The Winds of Winter” is also the title for the upcoming instalment in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series. So, now that we know that Game of Thrones will likely be covering events from the upcoming book, that leads us to wonder what the extended finale will have in store for us.
1. Winter Finally Arrives?
Arguably the tag line of the series, we’ve been told that “Winter is coming” for six years now. After Bran unintentionally summoned the White Walkers earlier this season, it appears that we are getting closer and closer to Winter. Moreover, the title of the finale also suggests that Winter will arrive before the end of the season. With the announcement that Game of Thrones will be heading toward it’s inevitable conclusion, perhaps the season six finale will be the day where Winter finally arrives for the folks of Westeros.
2. Daenerys Finally Gets to Westeros?
Another plot point that has been coming for six years is Dany getting to Westeros. In recent episodes we’ve seen Dany get the army that she’s always needed so perhaps now is the perfect time for her to finally make it to the promised land. She may require ten thousand ships, but with both Yara and Theon Greyjoy, as well as Euron Greyjoy planning on catching up with the Mother of Dragons, Dany’s arrival on Westerosi land could be imminent.
3. Somebody dies?
Lets be honest, an episode of Game Of Thrones where no one dies is rare – so it’s more than likely that somebody will die in the highly anticipated season finale. We all remember being devastated at Jon Snow’s death last year, so perhaps there will be a similar moment in this finale! Thrones has built up a reputation for character deaths – especially when one least expects it, so it’s probably inevitable that somebody will die. If I were a betting man, I’d put money on it.
That’s just a taster of what could lie ahead for us in the extended season finale of Game of Thrones. Keep your tissues at the ready Throners, it’s going to be one hell of a ride!
