4 ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Characters Who Have To Make A Return For The New Season

have been the name of the game throughout this third and most recent season of Marvel and ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., with the finale episode wrapping some of the big questions up in a neat little bow, whilst others fell to the wayside like so much discarded wrapping paper. Gotta keep something for next year after all.

Speaking of next year, there’s a bunch of characters from the superhero spin-off show who we haven’t had the pleasure of seeing on-screen for a long while, some harking all the way back to Season 1.

The Dream Team [ABC]

In a show like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. there’s a ton of potential for those tricky loose ends to crop back up at any given time, and we’ve got a feeling the upcoming Season 4 is going to mark the return of a few familiar, if almost forgotten, faces.

So, without further ado, here’s the four essential characters we want to see returning for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4.

Nick Fury

After his notable absence from Captain America: Civil War, many were left with the vital question: ?

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) [Marvel/Disney]

The man who started it all, Nick Fury, has been floating around in the background of the show ever since Season 1 when he handed control of S.H.I.E.L.D. over to Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), and in the from the very beginning.

Last seen in an Avengers: Age of Ultron cameo appearance, Fury has since been on the lam, hunting down the remnants of the HYDRA forces following the events of The Winter Soldier. It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him popping up again to provide a gentle guiding hand when Season 4 kicks off.

On that note, what’s Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) been up to? Surely she’s not still slaving away behind a desk at the Avengers Facility? We haven’t seen her since Age of Ultron, and she didn’t get so much as a mention in Season 3. Bit of a shame given her role as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comic books.

Calvin Johnson/Cal Zabo

Two words: Kyle MacLachlan.

Cal Zabo (Kyle MacLachlan) [ABC]

You need more words? Fine. We have a feeling that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t done with Daisy/Skye Johnson’s (Chloe Bennet) father just yet. The show left off with Cal Johnson during the emotional Season 2 finale, as he became Project T.A.H.I.T.I. buddies with Phil Coulson.

A complex character with highly human motivations and unfortunately morally dubious methods, Cal was an excellent villain-turned-neutral via memory experiment at his daughter’s request.

Season 3 seemed to suggest that there’s still a fine thread connecting Daisy and Cal, so we’d love to see him returning to the show for Season 4 as the reformed Doctor Winslow — even though he can’t remember his own daughter, that would certainly make for some emotional moments all round.

Agent Tomas Calderon

Okay we get it, not many people liked Agent Tomas Calderon when he was messing it up back in Season 1, but though Kirk Acevedo’s hard-ass agent may have rubbed everyone up the wrong way he left a pretty big thread hanging when he quietly ducked out of the show.

Is he dead? Is he alive? Who knows, he’s currently sitting in the uncomfortable position as the Schrödinger’s cat of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Last we heard of him he was in critical condition, but that was many years ago.

Presumably we’d have heard if he’d shuffled off the mortal coil, as his injuries sustained during his pursuit of Skye were caused when she smacked him into a tree and thus she’d be held responsible for his death.

Don't mess with trees Calderon [ABC]

So this means he’s probably still out there somewhere, waiting to make a return, still hating on Inhumans, and Skye/Daisy in particular…

Ian Quinn

Another one from way back when is Ian Quinn (David Conrad) who, like Agent Calderon, hasn’t been seen in the show since back in Season 1.

We last saw the conniving Quinn in the Season 1 finale, where he left HYDRA with the Gravitonium. One of the main antagonists from the premiere season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Quinn somehow managed to get off scot free after manipulating S.H.I.E.L.D. under orders from the Clairvoyant.

And don’t think we’ve forgotten about the fact that he shot Skye, it’s about time that she got some payback for that hurt.

It’s almost certain that Quinn is going to make a return at some point, you don’t just get to skulk off into oblivion with something like Gravitonium and not reemerge to pose a fresh slate of troubles for the team at some point.
