There are a whole bunch of — great news for fans who can’t wait for more — but that doesn’t mean they all feature the same type of zombie. For example, some zombies walk the walk but can’t talk the talk, whether their brains are addled by infection or their tongues have simply rotted away. Some run, some scream, some are sick, some are dead, but they (almost) all have one thing in common: they’re coming for you, Barbara!
This is by no means a comprehensive list of all the weird and wonderful types of zombie on offer, so please add any other zombie types you love in the comments.
As seen in: The Walking Dead
These zombies are slow and dumb, but become incredibly dangerous when formed into a herd. Where’s Daryl Dixon when you need him, huh?
As seen in: The Evil Dead, Pandemic,
Whether they’re possessed by a Kandarian Demon or simply retain something of their human intelligence, some zombies have the power of speech (though it’s unlikely you’d fancy having a conversation with most of them).
As seen in: Night of the Living Dead, Day of the Dead
Shufflers — aka the ‘Romero Zombie’ — may seem less terrifying than the modern, blood-dribbling sprinting kind, but their cold dead gaze and lust for flesh cement them as a horror classic all the same.
As seen in: 28 Weeks Later, World War Z, Zombieland
Possibly the most deadly of all zombies, these undead beasts have terrifying speed (and often agility to match) that makes them formidable foes.
As seen in: Dawn of the Dead, Call of Duty: Black Ops
Typically a more aggressive type of zombie, the screamer usually shrieks and raves because of some type of unholy rage brought on by an infection.
As seen in: Zombeavers, Zoombies
Usually on the comedy side of scary, the animal zombie may be just one infected type of animal (like the dogs in Resident Evil) or an entire species afflicted by a particular contagion (as in low budget schlockfest Zombeavers).
