7 Great Movies That Will Make YOU Appreciate The U.S. Armed Forces! by Derek Walters , May 25th, 2016 at 8:50pm Share on Facebook Share to TwitterHappy Memorial Day!I would like to give a special shout-out to any soldiers reading this. Thank YOU, for risking YOUR lives for US, and thank YOU for fighting for OUR freedom! As Americans, Memorial Day is a special holiday. A day that we set aside each year in the month of May, to remember the brave men and women that sacrificed their lives fighting and protecting our country.I think we too often take for granted what our country’s soldiers do for us, and sometimes we need to take a step back and be a little more appreciative of what they’ve done for us, and continue to do each and every day. With that being said, below are 7 great movies that should help YOU appreciate what our soldiers do!1. Glory – 1989Ever since…well, the beginning of time really, people have been fighting for freedom. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars ever, and quite a bit of things were accomplished because of it, like freedom for all colors. This film is arguably one of the greatest war films of all time, and gives us a 2 hour glimpse of what this awful war was like.2. Fury – 2014Probably one of the best war films since Saving Private Ryan (below) and Platoon (also below), takes place in the midst of WWII, and follows Army sergeant Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Brad Pitt), as he and his five-man crew lead a Sherman tank on a deadly mission behind enemy lines, and into the heart of Nazi Germany.3. Saving Private Ryan – 1998Possibly Steven Spielberg’s greatest movie ever, was nominated for 11 Oscars, but won only 5 during the 71st Academy Awards. Though it only won those 5, it definitely deserved ’em, especially for that Omaha Beach scene!4. Apocalypse Now – 1979Already a classic Vietnam war film, it follows Martin Sheen’s Captain Willard, as he and his company of street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer played by the great Robert Duvall, and a crazy freelance photographer, played by Dennis Hopper, travel further and further into the heart of darkness to find and terminate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who was once a promising officer who’s reportedly gone completely mad.5. Platoon – 1986Charlie Sheen plays, Chris Taylor, who drops out of college to go and enlist in combat duty in Vietnam in 1967. As soon as he’s on the ground and in the middle of battle, his idealism fades. Infighting in his unit between Tom Berenger’s Staff Sergeant Barnes, who believes nearby villagers are harboring Viet Cong soldiers, and Willem Dafoe’s Sergeant Elias, who has a more sympathetic view of the locals, ends up pitting the soldiers against each other as well as against the enemy.6. Black Hawk Down – 2001The film has an allstar cast of many great actors: Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Hardy to name a few. Black Hawk Down takes place in 1993 as the U.S. sends special forces into Somalia to destabilize the government and bring food and humanitarian aid to the starving population. Using Black Hawk helicopters to lower the soldiers onto the ground, an unexpected attack by Somalian forces brings two of the helicopters down immediately. From there, the U.S. soldiers must struggle to regain their balance while enduring heavy gunfire.7. Act of Valor – 2012Act of Valor takes real active-duty Navy SEALs, and sticks them into an adrenaline ride which makes only a few short stops, but with all the real-feel action, you’ll quickly forgive ’em.So What Do YOU Think?
