WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for those who haven’t watched the season six finale.
It’s always a bitter sweet moment to watch a season finale, especially if your favorite show is Game of Thrones. This finale set us up for the next season. This episode delivered tremendously and unfortunately, it’s the end of the road for this season on Game of Thrones.
Running at 69 minutes, this finale was filled with such excitement, with little time to catch a breath. There were moments in this episode that, no doubt, had fans out of their seats and wondering what had just happened. There were so many “explosive” moments in this episode, I don’t know where to begin, so without further ado, let’s look back on this thrilling season finale:
This was something that was being built up for quite a while now. We knew for a long time that a large amount of Wildfire was being kept secret, under the sept, from the public eye and was being saved used for something big.
Using the Wildfire sequence for the opening scene was very unpredictable, but as the Queen was getting dressed nicely for her trial and seeing Tommen forced to stay in the Red Keep, we all knew something was going to go down.
Tommen was a very likeable king. He was young, but knew the politics and took heed to wisdom. Although we knew Tommen’s death was soon approaching, it was still unexpected. When we see a still shot of a window for a long period of time, we know something is either coming in, or going out.
This scene was important because we knew Cersei tried everything in her power to keep her son safe. She knew all of her children would die before her, but it seemed that she knew it was soon approaching. Due to her reaction when she asked to see his body, the reaction was very different between the deaths of her other children. Tommen was the last thing that humanized Cersei and now that he’s gone, she’s developed into this wretched creature with no remorse for her enemies. It’ll be interesting to see her as the main antagonist in the next season.
Tyrion, Hand of the Queen
Game of Thrones has done an amazing job at making us love Tyrion. Sure, he’s a Lannister. Viewers ae supposed to hate Lannisters, however seeing him wear the badge once again, takes us back a few seasons and reminds us that Tyrion is in fact, a character fans enjoy to see as a “good guy”. It will be very intriguing to see him as Hand of the Queen when they try to take out Cersei. It seems everybody is going to meet in King’s Landing in the next season, so we’re just going to have to see where this goes.
Revenge on Walder Frey
Seeing Arya finally having her revenge, definitely sets up something big for her in season seven. This scene was there for fan service and they delivered. It’s has been a long time coming, but was well worth the wait. Fans have been wanting Walder dead since he had the Starks killed.
Although we don’t know where Arya is heading, it seems all she’s worried about is taking names off her hit list. Watch out Cersei!
Jon’s Parentage Finally Truly Revealed
The R+L=J theory has finally been revealed. Jon’s mom, is none other than Ned’s sister, Lyanna. This was a scene fans have been waiting for years to see. Now that he’s technically a Targaryen, I can’t wait for the story to adapt his true parentage into what’s to come with Daenerys’ story. Tying that in would make season seven incredible if Dany and Jon team up to take down Cersei.
Cersei Becomes Queen Again
This episode opened with Cersei letting go of what she was, and nearly ending with what she has now become. She’s not the Cersei we met in the series premiere. She was a very smart woman to begin with, but now she’s grown to be more strategic and knows her enemies inside and out. I was really hoping she would die this season but it looks like we’re stuck with her a while longer.
Earlier this season, we heard Jaimie talk to Edmure about doing whatever it takes to get back to Cersei, by all means necessary. The look he gave Cersei as Qyburn set the crown on her head, was a look of disappointment. It was a look of failure for them as lovers and for the Lannisters and I believe Jaimie knows that she has gone off the deep end and there’s nothing for her to turn back to.
Daenerys Crossing the Narrow Sea
We’ve been waiting to see Dany cross the narrow sea for some time now and it finally looks like this will be fulfilled in season seven. Dany has been the most transformed character since the pilot episode as she started as a woman being sold to the Dothraki, to a queen with dragons and an army to take her rightful seat on the throne. As I stated before, I would love to see Dany and Jon possibly team up. It would only make sense because Jon has no desire for the throne and when they find out they’re related, it could set up a solid story for us to enjoy for season seven.
This was an excellent season and this episode was by far, the greatest episode in television history. From the score, to storytelling, to dialogue, to the ending was pure and couldn’t be done any better. They have to do quite a bit to top this season but we know they’ll deliver.
