Amber Heard’s Domestic Abuse Allegations Against Johnny Depp Have Unleashed The Worst Of The Internet

Johnny Depp , but it isn’t the wildly popular 52-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star who is facing the worst of the public and media backlash.

In a sadly almost predictable fashion, the tone of many articles have pointed the finger at Amber Heard insinuating she is untrustworthy before a trial has taken place (although Heard was granted a restraining order) and this sentiment is echoing over the Twittersphere. Here, people seem to be hellbent on convincing their followers that a man they have never met would never do such a thing. In short, the dominant message seems to be simple. Amber is a liar.

This phenomenon is best illustrated by the #ImWithJohnny hashtag that was briefly trending on Twitter:

The general narrative here seems to be that Depp is innocent until proven guilty (and rightly so) whereas Heard is a gold digging, fame hungry liar until proven a victim. There is something very wrong with this picture.

Despite the fact he is the one accused of a crime, who called Amber’s claims “outrageous” and added that “In all these years I have known Johnny he has never been physically abusive with me and this looks nothing like the man I lived with for 14 wonderful years.”

However good a father and partner Depp has been in the past, none of this has much bearing on how he may have behaved with Heard. Especially when it seems like alcohol, an already rocky relationship and in the alleged incident.

Without the mantle of wealth and celebrity, many ordinary women stay with their abusive partners for years because they are afraid people won’t believe what they have been through at the hands of their often seemingly upstanding husbands. The reaction to Amber Heard’s allegations only stands to reinforce this narrative.

As outsiders, we know so little of the full story that jumping to conclusions isn’t doing anyone any favors. Maybe it’s time to stand back and realize that both Depp and Heard are probably at fault in some way and let the court figure out exactly how.
