In the wake of accidental death there is very little meaning to be found. Life is fleeting and fragile. There is nothing more frustrating than a life taken too soon accept maybe a life taken too soon in a way that could have been avoidable.
We are all still mourning of 27-year-old actor Anton Yelchin. To add frustration to sadness, details have emerged regarding his accidental death. Gizmodo reports that the car Yelchin owned, that was found pinning him to his own brick mailbox, was a 2015 Jeep Cherokee.
Fiat Chrysler recalled certain Jeep Grand Cherokees earlier this year, including Yelchin’s model, for their “rollaway” risk. Apparently it was easy in some vehicles to believe the driver had shifted the car to park, when it wasn’t actually in park mode.
The recall stated:
The affected vehicles, equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a monostable gear selector, may not adequately warn the driver when driver’s door is opened and the vehicle is not in PARK, allowing them to exit the vehicle while the vehicle is still in gear.
According to a submission to the NHTSA, as of April 12, 2016, Fiat Chrysler had identified 212 crashes, 308 claims of property damage, and 41 injuries all stemming from this defect.
It’s a cruel world where the smallest of defects can result in such tragedy. But it does appear we may be getting a broader idea of what happened to Yelchin. LAPD have not yet publicly declared Yelchin’s cause of death, though they did confirm he drove a 2015 Jeep Cherokee.
The news, of course, does nothing to diminish today.
