Gary Brooks Faulkner (character Nicholas Cage portrays), a Colorado man whom authorities allege tried to sneak into Afghanistan in order to hunt and kill al Qaeda head Osama bin Laden. The 52-year old American was arrested in a forest in northwestern Pakistan while trying to cross into Afghanistan’s wooded Nuristan province, a known lair of Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters. When you see another film starring Nicholas Cage, who seems to take any role he can get his hands on, you immediately think here we go again. Another film that will most likely be so bad…another role Nicholas Cage has taken on just for what seems like a desperate way to get another payday.
But, color me surprised.I may be in the minority here, but I found Cage’s over the top portrayal of Gary Faulkner to be quite entertaining. This feels like a refreshing role for Cage and a great change of pace from his series of seriously dramatic flops (aside from Croods).
