Batman: The Killing Joke To Theaters Is A Brilliant Move for DC Animated Films!

For quite sometime, I have been a fan of the DC Original Animated Movies. While this series of direct to dvd films have had their shares of low points, there is no denying that Warner Bros has found success with this trend of movies. However I would have never imagine the day would come when one of these movies would be featured on the big screen-that is until now. The next feature in lineup of DC Animated film series is Batman: The Killing Joke; a movie based on the popular story by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. Along with featuring the voices of Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Ray Wise and Tara Strong, the movie is also being produced by none other than Bruce Timm; the man behind the likes of Batman: The Animated Series. The film is schedule to hit shelves on August 2nd, but now viewers will have a chance to watch this new animated feature on the big screen. Fathom Events will feature a special showing on The Killing Joke on July 28th where the film will play in select theaters at 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm.

This is not the first project from Bruce Timm to be featured in this format. On December 25,1993 viewers were treated to the animated, and vastly underrated, feature: Batman Mask of the Phantasm. Since its release Mask of the Phantasm has become a cult favorite for Batman fans; however the film under performed in the box office due the movie having a short notice in its marketing. Thankfully it does not appear that history will repeat itself with The Killing Joke. Not only does the film has some time to market itself in theaters, but the concept of special events will help this movie greatly by giving it a chance to succeed in a subtle matter.

This move by Warner Bros can be helpful in a number of ways. If the film’s run in theaters is successful then The Killing Joke could follow in the footsteps of last year’s Dragonball Z: Resurrection F which got extended time in theaters due to its success in the box office. If Killing Joke does well in the box office then the chances of the film playing for another week seems quite high (though the following week would be the movie’s initial release date). Not only could this move help this film chances at being successful but this could pave the way for future DC Animated Movies. If the event does well then it might be possible that future DC Animated films could get the same treatment. Featuring other DC animated properties on the big screen could be great business for the studio as it would help them to advertise this trend of movies. Granted this may depend on the movie itself but the idea still leads to major possibilities for the DC Animated Movies.

There are great opportunities in bringing Batman: The Killing Joke to theaters. Not only does it make the animated feature something special to see but the movie could bring a new kind of event to theaters. However this will only work if The Killing Joke has a successful run in theaters; and though things do seem high for the movie, its chances is still up in the air. Nevertheless this new development for Batman: The Killing Joke has gotten me that more excited to see this latest feature from the DC Original Animated Film Series.

Batman: The Killing Joke hits theaters on July 28th and his Blu-Ray on August 2nd.
