Box Office: ‘Finding Dory’ Triumphs Over ‘Independence Day’

With a sequel that people have been waiting 20 years for, a tale of woman v shark and a historical true story all hitting theaters this weekend, let’s take a look at the weekend’s top 5!

Here are the official top 5 movies at the U.S Box Office this past weekend, courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

1) Finding Dory – $73.2 Million

Pixar’s absolute behemoth of a movie, Finding Dory, ranked up #1 again for the second weekend in a row. In it’s first weekend, Dory broke the record for highest debut for an animated film ever and continues to do well, thanks to great word of mouth and a fantastic marketing campaign.

2) Independence Day: Resurgence – $41.6 Million

Slightly disappointing for 20th Century Fox, Independence Day: Resurgence failed to crack the estimated $50 Million, which the original film back in 1996 hit, over the weekend but still brought in a fair amount of money. The film received mostly negative reviews, some critics hailing it as the worst film of 2016 so far. Personally I had some fun with the film, but I will agree that it’s pretty messy, you can check out my review

3) Central Intelligence – $18.3 Million

The Dwayne Johnson & Kevin Hart action comedy hit the number 3 spot in it’s second week of release, taking it’s current worldwide total to $83 Million.

4) The Shallows – 16.7 Million

The Shallows received mostly positive reviews over the weekend and actually over-performed at the box office.

5) Free State Of Jones – $7.7 Million

The Matthew McConaughey lead historical epic directed by Gary Ross rounds out the top 5 with a small $7.7 Million. The film received mostly negative reviews.
