Breaking Down The ‘Rogue One’ Sizzle Reel From Star Wars Celebration

At this weekend’s , Disney released a heart-stopping behind-the-scenes sizzle reel promoting Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the amount of new footage is incredible. We get an inside look into the mechanics of the film as well as a sneak peek at new faces, creatures and gigantic sets.

Check out the thrilling Rogue One sizzle reel:

Rogue One will be the first spin-off film in the series and acts as a prequel to A New Hope. In a time when the Jedi are extinct, Jyn Erso — a criminal with a skill set of use to the Rebellion — is hired to steal the plans for the Death Star. She is joined by a team of Rebel misfits, all with a different asset for the mission.

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards has said that the movie will focus on the heroics of everyday people who have no abilities in the Force. Remember, during this time there are no known Jedi, so the Rebels have been forced to defend themselves from the Galactic Empire through the efforts of people like Jyn Erso.

New Faces Of Rogue One

Getting a closer look at Jyn Erso’s band of misfits sent to gather the plans for the Rebellion helped us understand each one’s different role. The self-proclaimed Rebels are seen battling stormtroopers and Death Troopers while trying to escape safely from the grips of Darth Vader’s minions.

Jyn, Captain Cassian Andor, Bodhi, Baze, and Chirrut Imwe fight hand-to-hand against the Galactic Empire in way we haven’t seen in Star Wars films before. Director Gareth Edwards explained “It’s about the humanity of it, which just makes the whole thing so real.”

Jyn’s team are everyday men with no abilities from the Force. This makes them susceptible to extreme danger as they move forward against the dark side in this dangerous mission. Jyn, who was recruited by the Rebels to lead the team, has something else on her mind that could compromise the mission.

The Empire is also after her father, Galen Erso, for some specific scientific knowledge. My guess is what he knows may be the final key in finishing the Empire’s weapon.

Throughout the footage, it would seem Cassian, Bodhi, Baze, and Chirrut act as Jyn’s “bodyguards” of sorts, always on the front lines to make sure that even if no one else makes it out alive, Jyn can return to the Rebels with the plans.

It seems as though the team is separated at some point, with Cassian manning the Rebel forces while Chirrut is off in a forest somewhere. They battle with stormtroopers — repeatedly — in their own distinct fighting styles. Cassian and Baze have more of a military fighting style, while Chirrut looks to be far more graceful.

Chirrut also happens to be blind, but has no trouble defending himself or his crew. He is one of the only people who still believes in the Force and in the existence of Jedi. He himself may not be a Jedi, but his knowledge of the Force clearly sharpens his combat skills.

We also get a quick glimpse at as Jyn Erso seemingly looks to him for answers. We’ve heard Saw warn Jyn of what she could become should she continue down the path she’s going. “If you continue to fight, what will you become?” he asks.

New Droids And Creatures

Tons of never-before-seen creatures and droids were revealed in the new Rogue One footage, proving that this may be one of the most visually stunning Star Wars films yet. The new droid we see is K-2SO, a character belonging to Captain Andor that will play the C-3PO role in Rogue One. He is said to be brutally honest — in common droid fashion.

There are also tons of other new creatures that we’ve never seen in Star Wars before. Surely it won’t be long before we’re hunting down information about them on :

We do get a familiar face returning to the bunch, as Warwick Davis is shown giving an interview about filming. It’s become a tradition of sorts to have him in the Star Wars films, having played a role in all of them since Return of the Jedi.

The Empire

Stormtroopers and Death Troopers won’t make Jyn’s mission an easy one. They battle against the Rebel forces, revealing a closer look at some of Jyn’s biggest threats — including Director Orson Krennic of the Imperial forces. Darth Vader has tasked him with protecting their weapon of mass destruction at all costs, and I would guess that he is the one after Jyn’s father as well.

In one of the scenes, we see Captain Andor undercover as an Imperial officer fighting with a stormtrooper. This also gives us a look at the sheer size of the practical sets the crew built.

The Imperial ship must be where Jyn retrieves the plans, and there she will most likely meet Krennic — or perhaps Vader — face-to-face. Being that she has no Jedi abilities, getting out of the grips of the Empire will be where things start to heat up.

We also see a closer detail of the Death Trooper suits that eerily resemble Darth Vader. By the time we get to A New Hope, Death Troopers are nowhere to be seen, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Getting The Plans To The Rebellion

With stormtroopers flanking her, Jyn fights for her life and runs, gripping what could very well be the plans for the Death Star. Cassian is at her side, holding off blaster fire as they desperately run to safety. Will Jyn give up her efforts to save her father in order to make the mission for the Rebellion priority?

With how tight she holds it, there is definitely something important about the item in her left hand. I would go ahead and speculate it’s the Death Star plans for the Rebellion.

We also get an in-depth look at just how real every scene filmed actually was. Like The Force Awakens, Rogue One is being filmed with as little CGI as possible to get more raw and honest emotion from the actors — and the audience.

The explosions are as real as they come, with stunt actors being thrown across the set on harnesses.

Some CGI is being used, of course, but the sets are still massive in size and the actors are doing incredible stunts to make sure the scene comes out as real as possible.

The Force

At the end of the explosive sizzle reel, we see that Chirrut may have Jyn herself convinced that the Force exists. Jyn looks to her teammates and fittingly says:

I don’t know about you, but I got goosebumps. The fact that the effort of Jyn and her team will be what starts the domino effect of events that brings the Force back to life and reignites the Jedi is pretty powerful. We learned so much from this footage and after many expressed doubts about , I think it’s fair to say those doubts are gone.

Rogue One will be the rawest Star Wars film yet and introduce a variety of new characters that could play major parts in future movies. Overall, it’s pretty refreshing to have such a new take on the universe while still bringing in familiar faces like Darth Vader to connect them all.

Rogue One‘s release date of December 16 can’t come soon enough. What did you think about the new Rogue One footage?
