Calista Flockhart Is Returning For ‘Supergirl’ Season 2 In A Recurring Role

We were all delighted at the prospect of — as it’s the home of other superhero television shows this meant that there will be more opportunities for crossovers and . However, all of these possibilities felt unimportant when a rumor started circulating the internet — a rumor that suggested that Calista Flockhart may not be able to return since Supergirl‘s production will be forced to move to Vancouver.

Thankfully, — Calista Flockhart will indeed be returning for the second season of Supergirl. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg confirmed this with the following statement:

‘Supergirl’ wouldn’t be ‘Supergirl’ without the amazing Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant. We are so excited Calista has agreed to continue on the show when she can. We and the audience love to see her on screen.

This statement clearly means that while Flockhart will be returning, it will be in a recurring capacity. After appearing in the majority of and having a huge influence on almost every character, how will a recurring capacity affect the show?

Less Appearances

Did somebody say "less appearances"?

Did somebody say “less appearances”?

As delighted as I am to hear that Flockhart will be returning, the recurring capacity means that she will be featured in less episodes. Less appearances from Cat Grant will definitely mean certain storylines will have to be reworked unless the writers come up with a genuine reason to intermittently write Flockhart out.

There are several possibilities for this — If CatCo Worldwide Media is a conglomerate company, then there will likely be more chains around the world — perhaps Cat will be needed to make an appearance at other CatCo premises every now and again. Or perhaps she will visit her son Adam after the two bonded last season. One thing’s for sure, Supergirl‘s dynamic won’t be the same in the episodes without Flockhart — her character possesses incredible warmth and often has hilarious one-liners.

Kara’s New Job Won’t Involve Cat Grant

Is there even a Kara without Cat?
Is there even a Kara without Cat?

At the end of the first season, Cat finally rewarded Kara for all her years of service by giving her an office and asking her to come up with a job that she would like to do. The decision to make such a change for Kara almost feels like a contingency plan — it was as if the writers suspected that Flockhart wouldn’t be around as much in the following season and thus by giving Kara her own office, she won’t be constantly running into Cat every episode.

Kara’s new job will give her independence but we hope that her and Cat bump shoulders every now and again because it makes for great television and some hilarious moments.

A New Parental Figure?

Cat is irreplaceable.

Cat is irreplaceable.

Kara looks up to Cat, both when she’s Supergirl and when she’s at her day job. Remember how Cat often gives advice to Kara, not only in her professional life but about her personal life? Similarly, she gives Supergirl advice and was her only ally in the finale when the whole world was under alien mind control.

This makes me wonder if Kara will get a new parental figure to guide her in Cat’s absence? Cat gives Kara advice at least once an episode, so if Cat is not there on a particularly tough day, then who will fill the role? Perhaps , or perhaps somebody else. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

You’re a great friend and ‘ally’, Miss Grant!

Supergirl wouldn’t be nearly as appealing without Calista Flockhart. The Ally McBeal star gives the show a sense of warmth that no one else could possibly replicate. Recurring or not, it’s great news to hear that the Queen of Media will be returning — just make sure you don’t use her elevator!
