There’s a holy system in the world of superheroes, in which some things are canon and some things are not. Whether it’s in movies or in comic books, the likes of Marvel and DC will confirm — or ignore — various fan theories, shaping these universes along the way. But on the other side of the mirror, there’s a whole fan world ready to go wild, and imagine whatever they want to.
That applies particularly to romantic relationships between characters: a couple can range from just finding them cute together in your own personal fantasy, to actually arguing that their love would make perfect sense within their respective story arcs. Leave it to fan artists to illustrate these fantasies, and it doesn’t take much to develop a whole fandom around one particular couple.
Because comic books and comic book-based movies , it’s also among these fan-made love lives that you’ll find most LGBT superhero couples. Now, this isn’t about arguing whether these couples should actually exist in the official comics — simply enjoy the drawings, and let us know which couple you’ve dreamed of in the comments below!
Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes
The has probably produced enough art to compile a whole comic book series of its own. While in the Marvel canon, it’s been pretty clear that this relationship won’t happen (personally, I think they make more sense as friends), it’s still quite fun to imagine them madly in love. Plus, you screenshot a movie at the right time and there’s plenty of sexy interpretations to make — just look at Bucky’s gaze in the title pic!
This illustration by is quite believable — can’t you imagine them riding their motorcycle into the sunset together?
Same goes for this art piece by : That’s a nice touch with the shield.
Batgirl and Supergirl
Batgirl and Supergirl are already a team in the comics, and Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy even tease them about being a couple! This drawing by is the tamest illustration of their love I could find, but there’s plenty more on fan art sites such as Deviantart.
Batman and Flash
Who would have thought? This Batman/Flash couple is quite a surprise, but it’s alive and well in the world of fan fiction. The drawing above, by , also makes you realize how perfectly their costumes match — do they ever switch masks?
Meanwhile, this little panel by perfectly makes fun of the whole ship. In case you weren’t familiar with the original drawing, this piece is based on the meme by below, using characters from Pride & Prejudice.
Batman and Superman
One of the most obvious pairings that would definitely not happen in the canon — remember that one movie called Batman v Superman? — but just had to be imagined by fans, is the caped couple of Batman and Superman. Artist made a beautifully old-fashion portrait of the two.
Enchantress and Black Widow
We keep on hearing of , but so far that only includes men. How about a tender and feminine kiss like the one imagined by ? This version is miles away from the bleak spin on DC’s Enchantress which we’ll see in the upcoming Suicide Squad.
Tony Stark and Bruce Banner
The Tony Stark/Bruce Banner pairing is appropriately called the Science Bros, as many fans have imagined them nerding out together (and making out, too). They do both have a grumpiness that’d make them quite a match for each other.
This cute version by basically reimagines Hulk as giant cuddly teddybear.
Here’s a more realistic drawing by . Can you see the chemistry?
