Fans and critics alike have fallen in love with Captain America: Civil War, and while a wave of positive reactions made that obvious, nothing speaks quite like money. According to Variety, the superhero movie is now the biggest film of 2016 worldwide, sitting at a cool $981.9 million with expectations it will reach the $1 billion mark by the weekend. Disney’s Zootopia previously held the honor of being the year’s highest earner, with an impressive $971 million in worldwide box office totals.
As would be expected, Civil War has been a huge hit domestically, with current U.S. box office earnings at $310.5 million. Its major success has been helped by strong showings oversees, with $164.2 million earned in China and $60.7 million from North Korea contributing to $671.4 million in international totals.

Captain America: Civil War will be the 25th film to hit the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, and the seventh superhero film on the list. Other top-earning superhero films include The Avengers ($1.52 billion), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.41 billion), Iron Man 3 ($1.22 billion), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.09 billion), and The Dark Knight ($1.04 billion).
While Civil War currently sits at the top of this year’s box office totals, that honor might not last. More major superhero releases like X-Men: Apocalypse, Suicide Squad, and Doctor Strange are due before the year’s end. Outside of the superhero world, Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story look to be top earners.
