While the jury is out on whether Steve Rogers could defeat Deadpool in a fair fistfight, the box office earnings of each hero’s latest film paints a clearer picture. After just two weeks in cinemas, Captain America: Civil War has smashed the box office earnings of Deadpool with a haul of $765.9 million so far. In contrast, the Merc with a Mouth finished his worldwide run with overall takings of $762.1 million.

Don’t feel too bad for Wade though. Captain America: Civil War may have beaten Deadpool in the financial stakes, but the mercenary’s first solo outing still sits pretty at No. 5 on the list of top grossing films in 2016. This is particularly impressive when you take into account that Deadpool was rated R, which can often be a death sentence for films widely released in the US. Marvel V DCAs Captain America: Civil War fights on, marching toward that highly coveted $1 billion mark, a few other iconic heroes may soon be trampled underfoot in the box office stakes as well.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is one of the biggest hits of the year so far — well, financially at least, earning $868.2 million by the end of its run; but Steve Rogers and co. are closing the gap fast, adding further fuel to the never ending feud between Marvel and DC fans. Still, Captain America: Civil War shouldn’t sit too comfortably just yet. Upcoming releases such as Suicide Squad and Finding Dory could still provide some heavy competition and there’s always the matter of 2016’s current No. 1 film to beat, Zootopia, which earned $959.5 million in its total run.Forget Zemo, or even Iron Man.
