So you may be wondering, what is up with all the Buffy The Vampire Slayer posts all of a sudden? Well, it’s been 13 years to the day since the epic season finale of one of the greatest TV series ever created. Having redefined the horror genre, Buffy has left her mark in television history. Its flawless plots and unforgettable characters (and equally as amazing cast), even over a decade later, still thrill fans around the globe. So to commemorate the occasion I have chosen the greatest episode from each season (which wasn’t easy, trust me) This list is for those of you who would love to binge watch the series but don’t have to time see all 7 seasons. I hope you guys enjoy!
Season 1: Prophecy Girl
The twelfth episode of the first season, ‘Prophecy Girl’ is the first of an awesome collection of season finales. The episode begins with Giles discovering a prophecy that states that Buffy will fall at the hand of ‘The Master’, the big badie of the season. This is the first time we see Buffy waver from her position of slayer by saying:
“I’m sixteen years old. I don’t wanna die.”
These words showed the audience that although this hero faced monsters on an almost daily basis she still got frighten, giving the character more depth and dimension then audiences could have ever imagine. However, Buffy swallows her fears and rises to the occasion and saves Sunnydale. This would prove to be the first of many daring rescues.Season 2: Innocence
This episode is said to be a personal favourite of Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This is the episode when Angel, Buffy’s love interest at the time, turns evil after he exhibits ‘a moment of true happiness’ with her. This is a rather emotional episode where Buffy is forced to treat Angel as an enemy vampire and, like any other enemy vampire, he must be stopped, permanently. However, one of the greatest moments in the episode is when ‘The Judge’, a monster that claimed to be unable to be killed by any weapon forged, is awakened. However, being the innovative young teenager she is, Buffy decides to blast him a rocket launcher, neatly turning him into hundreds of scorching little pieces. Now that’s what I call thinking outside the Magic Box.Season 3: Band Candy
‘Band Candy’ is one of the series’s lighter and more comical episodes. It is the 6th episode of the third season and it follows Buffy and the Scoobies as they have to deal with parents and adults who seem to be exhibiting a second childhood due to come cursed candy. One of the most amazing and humorous parts of this episode is when Giles and Buffy’s mum spark a very spontaneous and humorous romance. Season 4: Hush
One of the most innovative episodes to ever be produced by the series, ‘Hush’ is the 10th episode of the 3rd season and is iconic for the fact that there is a total of 15 minutes of dialogue in the whole episode. This silence is due to a bunch of monsters called ‘The Gentleman’, which steal the voices of all the citizens of Sunnydale. Nominated for an Emmy Award, ‘Hush’ was produced to counter critics that claimed that Buffy‘s popularity was more based on the witty dialogue then the actual plot and story. This episode really didn’t fail to prove them wrong. Season 5: The Gift
Another iconic season finale, ‘The Gift’ is the 22nd episode of season 5. When a goddess of Hell, Glory, intends to use Dawn (who is actually the Key composed of living energy) to open the door to Hell, Dawn must die for Sunnydale to fall into an eternal Hell. However, Buffy cannot accept that her sister must die so, being the hero she is, she vowed not to let such a thing happen. Since she and Dawn share the same blood, she sacrifices her own life in Dawn’s place and she says the most thrilling final words to ever be uttered by a TV character:
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live. For me.
And with that Buffy dies for the second time in the series. Don’t worry though, she comes back, eventually.Season 6: Once More, With feeling
By far one of the most enjoyable episodes to be created by this series (which is quite a feat considering how amazing each episode of Buffy is) ‘Once More , With Feeling’ is the 7th episode of season 6. It follows the Scooby Gang and Spike as they try to save Dawn from a badly dressed demon who is causing the inhabitants of Sunnydale to spontaneously burst into song and dance and thus causing the characters to unintentionally reveal hidden truths. What’s really awesome is that it is the actual actors who are singing and not some professional singer voice-overs. Check out Tara’s song to Willow, who ever thought that girl could sing? or Anya and Xander’s duet if you want something a bit more… interesting. Each piece is entertainment at its best.Season 7: Chosen
The final season finale of the last ever created Buffy season was ending truly worthy of such a phenomenal series. It is one of the most inspirational episodes ever created, a real masterpiece. When Buffy, the gang and a group of scared, powerless Potential Slayers, Buffy sacrifices one last thing to save this world, her power as a Slayer. She gives her power to all the young girls in the world.
“In every generation, one Slayer is born, because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule… So I say we change the rule. I say my power, should be our power… From now on, every girl in the world who might be a Slayer, will be a Slayer. Every girl who could have the power, will have the power. Can stand up, will stand up. Slayers, every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?”
With these final words, with this final, ultimate sacrifice Buffy the Vampire Slayer was no more but Buffy the hero would live on forever.
Back when Buffy was first created they called revolutionary, and revolutionary it sure was and still is. It is almost impossible to believe that it’s been over a decade since the groundbreaking series finale. Some would have thought that some of the wonder and epicness that is Buffy the Vampire Slayer would have died out by now but, it continues to live in the hearts of both old and new fans. After all, aren’t we all Slayers?Which is your favourite episode?
