Back in 2014 it was the ice bucket challenge, but now there’s a brand new social media trend sweeping our news feeds for a great cause: the 22 pushup challenge. You might have noticed the challenge popping up online, but if you haven’t heard of this great use of social media, here’s the run down:
Each day, on average, 22 veterans commit suicide. Obviously this number is ridiculously high, and highlights a real issue with the amount of support that members of the military receive after they leave the armed forces. The idea of the 22 pushup challenge is to raise awareness of this alarmingly high statistic, but also show support for veterans.
The organization is behind the 22 pushup challenge, and have set a goal of , “to honor those who serve and to raise awareness for veteran suicide prevention through education and empowerment.” So far 22KILLS reports over 7 million pushups have been completed, but thanks to the movement being noticed by celebrities, the challenge will surely soon meet its goal.
