CONFIRMED: Mel Gibson Has Begun Work On A ‘The Passion Of The Christ’ Sequel

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Randall Wallace has said that he is currently working on a sequel with Mel Gibson. Speaking to THR, Wallace said:

“The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger.”

The original film, which was co-written and directed by Mel Gibson, went on to become the most successful independent film of all time, as well as the , even holding off the recently released .

Not only did the film perform well at the box office, but it was also nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Best Original Score. Prior to The Passion of the Christ, Gibson and Wallace had teamed up for the 1995 film Braveheart, which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won five.

Wallace, who studied religion at Duke University as well a graduate year of seminary, was unable to discuss studio or financial backing for the film, but did say that demand from the Christian community swayed the pairs decision to begin work on another film.
