There are many aspects of the Marvel comics we’ll never see incorporated into the MCU. and relationships fall by the wayside, not to mention the . But there’s a lot more of the MCU yet to come, and there are some vital connections yet to be established between Marvel’s sprawling cinematic universe.
So let’s talk about how Netflix’s Defenders could be brought into the films, and why there’s a golden opportunity to do this in the upcoming Captain Marvel film.
In the comics, Jessica Jones and Carol Danvers were old friends. Sharing a love of alcohol and punching jerks in the face, the two characters have a really interesting friendship, one which we almost got to see in the show Jessica Jones.
Hero Support: Carol’s Impact On Jessica
When Jessica first fell under Kilgrave’s influence in the comics, she was sent to the Avengers mansion to try and kill the heroes. But this mission went awry when Jessica recognized Carol Danvers as Ms Marvel, and the Avengers managed to subdue Jessica long enough to help her recover from Kilgrave’s control. When Jessica started Alias Investigations she frequently reached out to Carol as part of her detective work.
The two had a strong friendship, which helped Jessica overcome her PTSD from being mind controlled by Kilgrave. Of course, many of these details are different in the show. Jessica’s ability to resist Kilgrave’s powers is a crucial plot point, and it’s probably good that the Avengers weren’t involved in this part of the story. However, as showrunner Melissa Rosenberg revealed to IGN, Carol was initially part of Season 1.
“Back when it was at ABC Network, I did use Carol Danvers. But between then and when it ended up on Netflix, you know, the MCU shifted, and it also shifted away from the universe in the [comic] book. So there was a lot that I had to move away from, just in terms of sheer plot, and Carol Danvers got her own movie.”
This is all well and good, and it seems to be a part of the MCU’s history. But could Captain Marvel connect the MCU movies with the Netflix shows?
Uniting The Defenders & Avengers
Lately, between the MCU films and the TV shows. At one point we were expecting the Netflix Defenders to team up with the Avengers in one of the upcoming movies, but now the tone and style of the Netflix shows seems too disparate from the films. Not to mention, the Netflix shows very much have a self contained story.
But still, if the Marvel bosses did want to bring the corners of their empire closer together, Captain Marvel could be the perfect opportunity to do this. There’s still a lot we don’t know about Jessica’s past after all, and it’s entirely possible that she could have encountered Carol before she fell under Kilgrave’s influence.
Naturally, Carol’s role in Jessica’s story was taken up by Trish Walker, but there’s still plenty of ways for the two women to have an impact on each other’s lives. It would be great to see a cameo from Jessica in Captain Marvel, perhaps as a friend of Carol’s .
If Carol does know Jessica, we could have an interesting inversion of their story in the comics — after all, Jessica would have become an urban legend before Carol’s superhero origin story. This would make for an interesting relationship between the two women, as Carol draws from Jessica’s experience.
But beyond the strength of their relationship, this could serve to establish a connection between the movies and the Netflix shows, which would set up the worlds to collide later. Captain Marvel is set to release between the two parts of Avengers: Infinity War — Carol’s connection to Jessica could lead to Carol calling on backup from the Defenders in the fight against Thanos in Infinity War Part Two.
Ok, maybe it’s wishful thinking, but we’re still hoping that the two superhero teams could unite. This would be something we’ve never seen before in TV and movie history, as the two parts of the Marvel universe cross over in an awesome event. And Carol’s friendship with Jessica could be the perfect gateway to making this actually happen.
