Captain Marvel is a powerhouse set to smash into the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans are dying to know when she will arrive. Recently the Russo brother made a slip up saying she would be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War Part 1. However Kevin Feige also offered an update on the character through Fandango. Feige said,
“I think we’ll be announcing a filmmaker in the next month or two, and probably some cast members later in the summer, at the end of the summer,”
This was three weeks prior to the Russo brother’s mistake, and could indicate the news may be announced during the summer Comic Con. While he avoided revealing any real specifics behind the movie, he did state the movie would be,
“about Carol Danvers and that journey to being Captain Marvel.”
Now this is the part that is interesting. Comic book fans know Captain Marvel has been through many changes as a character during her time in the comics. Initially starting out as an Major in the U.S Air Force, then becoming the heroine Ms Marvel (along with a few other titles) until eventually become Captain Marvel as we see her today.
The many roles Carol has played
When she became the heroine Ms Marvel, she was the partner of Mar-Vell who was the original Captain Marvel in the comics. In 1982 Mar-Vell met his end in the comics, and Carol was not the one to take up his mantel. Instead an entire arrangement of character’s used his name before her. These included, Monica Rambeau, Genis-Vell, Phyla-Vell, Khn’nr and Noh-Varr. 30 years after the death of Mar-Vell, Carol finally took his mantel for herself, after some convincing by Steve Rogers.
Out with the old and in with the new
With her movie being placed right at the end of the third phase of the Cinematic Universe, was Feige hinting at us seeing her go through a character progression during the next wave of films? As crazy as it sounds it could be easily achieved. Carol’s first appearance could also be sooner than you think. Carol has a very close friendship with a friendly neighborhood webslinger, Spider-Man. With Spider-Man: Homecoming announced, it would be a perfect opportunity to introduce the character.
Spider-Man and Captain Marvel
The pairs friendship began while she was still Ms Marvel and the pair have teamed up both privately and been members on the same team more than once. The two have a friendship akin to characters like Dick Greyson and Barbara Gordon from DC. Both have clear sexual chemistry towards eacg, but never really cross that line, but always have remained close to each other. They both also view Captain America as a mentor and trusted adviser. With Micheal Keaton cast as the villain for Spider-Man: Homecoming, with the Vulture being the fan favorite for whom he could be playing, an Air-Force pilot could be quite helpful for Spider-Man.
The Vulture in flight
The Vulture has a clear advantage over Spider-Man with his ability to take to the air. Now just imagine how cool a fight would be if Spider-Man had a few jets supporting him in battle, giving him something to land on and swing from to go after the bad guy! The big question would be, how would Carol gain her powers through this movie? Well, Marvel have shown they are happy to change aspects behind a characters origin, Ultron for example. So they could have it altered to the Vulture being powered by Kree technology.
Ronan the Accuser
The Kree have been well established in the Cinematic Universe through both Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. With his ability to fly being through a belt he invented, it wouldn’t take much for it to be changed to a belt he find that is of Kree origin. Then when the belt goes “boom” at the end of the movie, Carol can be caught in the explosion and it result in her gain her powers. This kills two bird with one stone for Marvel, first they would be introducing a new character and secondly cover an origin story without it being the basis for an entire movie. From Spider-Man: Homecoming, the question is where would she appear next?
Jessica Jones Season 2?
Marvel have always stated that the Netflix series are linked to the Cinematic Universe, however there have been few actual links made between the Netflix shows and films. If Carol came into her powers at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Jessica would be a perfect choice to help the new heroine understand her new powers. While Carol’s story would act as a subplot for the season, she would enable them to step the action of the series up a notch. Carol could also help Jessica further embrace her own abilities and could lead to Jessica finally mastering her ability to fly. They would end Carol’s story in the season taking the new name of Captain Marvel, as Trish would be to eager to point of the lack of terror the name Ms Marvel invokes compared to Captain Marvel. The original script for Jessica Jones did include Ms Marvel, but she was replaced by Trish. So why not have Carol as the first strong link between the movies and Netflix shows by bringing her into the second season. This would also give the Defenders a clear route into the action of Avenger’s Infinity War Part 1.
She is ready to find herself
If Marvel were planning to go down this route, it would make Carol a new prominent character in the Cinematic Universe, and would be the building blocks to her eventually leading the Avengers in phase 4, like she has in the comics. With Feige also saying they will be announcing cast member in the summer, does that indicate our Carol Danvers could have already been found? If they are planning a complex way to progress her character before her own movie, it would make sense to have her already signed and ready to go. Fan favorites to play Carol Danvers include Ronda Rousey, Katheryn Winnick and Emily Blunt. Who would you like to see as our next Marvel Heroine?
