Dolph Lundgren Cast As Villain Of ‘Arrow’ Season 5 — But Who Is He Playing?

It’s a great time to be an Arrow-verse fan — at the CW’s TCA panel, , including the reveal that Dolph Lundgren will have a recurring role in Season 5 of Arrow as a big bad. Lundgren is perhaps most famous for his legendary turn as Rocky Balboa’s rival Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. He also starred in The Punisher, Masters Of The Universe and The Expendables franchise. Not to mention .

While not much else is known about the character, we do know that he will be the big bad of the flashbacks — which will come to an end after this season. Executive Producer Wendy Mericle revealed the news when she stated:

“In our flashbacks, which are set in Russia this season, we are going to be bringing in Dolph Lundgren as a Big Bad.”

At the end of last season, we speculated that this season’s flashbacks would be set in Russia because of Oliver’s connection to the country in previous seasons. Let’s not forget that we are very well acquainted with Anatoli Knyazev, also known as KGBeast, who became close friends with Oliver, consistently popping up during the flashbacks during Season 2. He also rescued Oliver, Diggle and Lyla from a Russian prison in the present day.

It is unknown if Lundgren’s role will be related to KGBeast, however it is worth noting that with many speculating that he could actually be the present day villain of Season 5. Furthermore, according to Mericle, we will find out how Oliver got that Bratva tattoo and how he learned to speak Russian. So it’s quite possible that Lundgren could show up as an enemy or ally of KGBeast and it’s also possible that the flashbacks will have major repercussions for the present day’s storyline.

However, will he be portraying an original role, or will he appear as a well-known DC Comics character? Let’s take a look and see if he could be playing any of these characters:

Savant

Skilled: Savant is a master of hand-to-hand combat.

Skilled: Savant is a master of hand-to-hand combat.

Once a rich heir to a large fortune, Brian Durlin is disowned by his father for his criminal actions. His first appearance is in Birds of Prey Issue 56 from 2003 when he moves to America, settling in Gotham City with the hopes of becoming a vigilante. However, he’s condemned by Batman, who praises his skills but berates him for not caring about those he was saving. Savant then moves into the blackmailing business using his computer skills. He also becomes an enemy of the Birds of Prey, kidnapping Black Canary in an attempt to blackmail Oracle into revealing Batman’s true identity. A genius, Savant has a non-linear memory and suffers from sporadic bouts of amnesia. He is also a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant.

Savant would be an interesting choice for Lundgren as he is definitely built for the role. Not to mention that Savant has come into contact with iconic characters like Black Canary, Huntress and the Calculator, all of whom have appeared on Arrow.

Creote

Aleksandr Creote is a Russian KGB agent and devoted partner of Savant — who he is also secretly in love with. He too first appeared in Birds of Prey Issue 56 in 2003. Incredibly muscular as well as tall, Creote is also very skilled and highly trained — a character worthy of Lundgren’s build and reputation. Both Savant and Creote constantly find themselves involved with the Birds of Prey, either opposing them or assisting them. Eventually, Creote opens up to Savant about his feelings and the two seem to enter into a relationship, concluding the original Birds of Prey series.

Another compelling reason as to why Lundgren could be either Savant or Creote is that it was also revealed at the TCAs that one character in the four superhero shows is going to come out. Could it be the new big bad of Arrow?

Maxim Zarov

Nimrod the Hunter: Maxim Zarov.

Nimrod the Hunter: Maxim Zarov.

First appearing in Action Comics Volume 2 Issue 6 in 2012, Zarov gains a reputation for being the world’s finest big game hunter, becoming known as Nimrod the Hunter. When he kills a charging tyrannosaurus, he believes that he has peaked, marking the end of his hunting career. However, he allows his pride to get the best of him and accepts the ultimate challenge — to kill Superman. He manages to track him down to Smallville and figures out that the Man of Steel’s true identity is Clark Kent until he is wrongly told otherwise. Unfortunately for Zarov, things don’t go too well afterwards as he is the one hunted down by Superman and ultimately defeated and jailed.

If, like the comics, his reputation precedes him in the Arrow-verse flashbacks, perhaps Amanda Waller would need someone with Oliver Queen’s talents in order to take him down.

Molotov

Molotov.

As Arrow is trying to move away from metahumans and the mystical, perhaps this option is unlikely. But it’s worth considering anyway. Molotov first appeared in The Outsiders Issue 10 back in 1986. Although he hasn’t appeared often since then, what he could do certainly makes him unforgettable. He is a rather large government agent who can cause explosions — even if it’s himself doing the exploding. Molotov is certainly an intimidating individual and Lundgren would be more than capable of stepping into his shoes.

These are just some of the characters that Lundgren could be portraying. Of course, he could always end up playing an original character — Arrow has had major success incorporating original characters into the show before, so there’s no reason why they couldn’t do it again.

No matter who he ends up playing, expect to see some amazing moments between him and Oliver as the flashbacks bow out once and for all. With a big bad like Lundgren and Oliver’s past with Russia carrying the final year of the flashbacks, it looks like the bar has been set high for the main show’s present day big bad. It’s certainly going to be an interesting year for Arrow.
