Everything We Know About ‘Arrow’ Season 5

Season 4 was supposed to be the season got itself back on track. Damien Darhk was promised to be the show’s best big bad since Malcolm Merlyn. Felicity was supposed to paralysed — and we all know how that worked out.

I think it’s fair to say, even as a bigger fan of Arrow than the CW’s other superhero shows, that Season 4 was a bit of a mess. Entertaining at times, boring at others. Ambitious one episode, exploring old ground the next. It was solid, mostly, but not the reinvention it needed to be to keep pace with The Flash.

Could five be the magic number? Let’s take a look at everything we know about Arrow Season 5.

Who Is Anton Church?

Arrow is the kind of show defined by the quality of its villain. This year, according to , that villain will be one Anton Church, a “a ruthless crime lord who sets out to fill the sizeable void left by Damien Darhk and HIVE”. In some ways I’d rather Darhk was forgotten about altogether, but hey.

Supposedly inspired by Idris Elba’s iconic drug kingpin Stringer Bell in The Wire, Church is a big guy who “cuts his way through the shadows” and intends to remove the biggest threat to his gradual takeover of Star City. That would be Oliver. He doesn’t appear to be based on any known DC Comics villain.

Who Else Is Back In Team Arrow?

Also is the series regular role of James, a man on a mission of vengeance, around Oliver’s age, who could “just as easily shake your hand as your best friend or break your neck as your worst enemy”. No casting news on James or Church just yet.

There is a slight possibility that they could be one and the same, but it sounds from their biographies like James will be a figure of mystery in the show, while Church will be defined from the off as a bad guy.

Elsewhere, it’s good news for fans of Mr. Terrific with Echo Kellum returning as Curtis Holt. No precise news about returns for Thea, Felicity, Diggle or Captain Lance, but expect all to be on board for the fifth chapter. But the really big news for fans? Colton Haynes for “a few episodes”. More Arsenal is always welcome.

When Does The Fun Begin?

Come on now. You can practically set your clock by the return of the CW’s superhero shows. Expect Season 5 to begin the second week of October 2016, with a trailer a few weeks earlier. You’ll find that and more info here on castings as soon as we have it. Until then…
