Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis) is an under-appreciated character in The Vampire Diaries who has much potential and is a total bada$$. Even vampires (who are kind of immortal, if you haven’t heard) have reason to fear him.
One of the few remaining humans on The CW TV show, Ric has much knowledge regarding the mythical species and how to defeat them. A great person to have on your good side, but definitely not someone to mess with. Don’t be fooled by his mortal being. Below is everything you need to know about Alaric Saltzman.
1. Professor Saltzman Came To Mystic Falls As A History Professor
Alaric Saltzman came to Mystic Falls High School to teach History. Little do his students know, his history knowledge extends far beyond the realm of their textbooks. Ric is a connoisseur of everything mystical, mythical and magical — with a particular interest in vampires.
2. Saltzman Actually Moved To Avenge His Late Wife
Alaric may teach History as a career, but it also serves as a cover for his real agenda. In actuality, his rationale for moving to town is to avenge his late wife, Isobel Flemming (Mia Kirshner). The widower learnt of the circumstances behind Isobel’s murder and tracked the vampire responsible back to Mystic Falls. Care to take a wild guess as to whom that savage vamp is?
3. Damon Salvatore And Alaric Develop A Bromance
That’s right, the culprit is none other than our beloved Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). In Season 1, we still have trouble digesting how awesome Damon is due his blunt cruelty. However, we all learn to love him with time and we’re not the only ones.
Even Alaric had to move past his hatred for Damon when he found out Isobel chose to become a vampire and left him willingly. He later discovered Isobel was also Elena Gilbert’s (Nina Dobrev) biological mother. Alaric eventually bonded over Bourbon with his new drinking buddy, Damon. Throughout the show, these two become BFFs (with only a couple of rough patches).
4. Alaric Fell In Love With Elena’s Aunt Jenna… Who Also Died
Because Alaric has one of the most cursed love lifes on The Vampire Diaries — and that’s saying something — he falls for Elena and Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) aunt Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning).
The couple become quite close until Jenna became another vampire victim of Mystic Falls. First, she was turned into one of them herself, then she was staked during a ritual by an Original vampire, Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan).
5. Ric Became Elena & Jeremy’s Guardian
At this point in time, the Gilberts have lost pretty much every adult in their lives: their biological parents (both pairs), the adoptive ones, the aunt, the uncle, half these people are actually both. It’s quite complicated but bottom line is they’re kind of alone in the world — much like poor Alaric. He takes his “step-father” role to the next level and becomes Elena and Jeremy’s guardian.
6. He Became A Blood-Thirsty Enhanced Original Vampire With An Evil Alter Ego… Yeah
Because Alaric has acquired a magic Gilbert ring, he is capable of coming back to life if he is ever killed by a supernatural cause. The Mikaelson’s mother Esther (Alice Evans), the Original Witch, manipulated Ric’s spirit to unleash an evil alter ego that worsened with each death. Esther even turned him into an Enhanced Original Vampire and linked his life to Elena’s.
This turned him into a vampire-hunter who despised blood-suckers, which made him an ideal weapon to murder (i.e. the Mikaelson siblings). Rebekah Mikaelson to stop Alaric, thus turning Ms. Gilbert into a vampire. This sentenced Ric to “The Other Side,” a purgatory for dead supernatural beings.
7. Alaric Found His Way Back To The Other Side
While Saltzman had made several appearances as a ghost, he was mostly just bored on The Other Side. That is, until (Kat Graham) brought down the veil that separated the living from the dead. He was able to make his way back to his vampire-self with all his friends. Except not really, because Damon and Bonnie may have gotten stuck in the process. Oops.
8. Alaric Died Again, Only To Be Resurrected As A Human
In an attempt to save Damon from Tripp Cooke (Colin Ferguson), a vampire-hating descendant of a Founding Family, Alaric found himself sucked into the magic purification zone that covered Mystic Falls. This negated any magic, which was essentially a death sentence. The stab wound that originally turned Ric into a vampire reappeared with fatal consequences.
Dr. Jo Laughlin (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), who worked at the Whitmore College, resurrected him with her medical skills and witch knowledge from being a member of the Gemini covent. Upon revival, Alaric had lost all supernatural capacities and found himself to be once again a mortal human.
9. Jo And Alaric Fell In Love And Were Engaged
Two single sexy professors who are both aware of supernatural forces. Who could have predicted that one? Elena set them up and this couple’s love blossomed hurriedly. It wasn’t long before they walked down the aisle. Little did they know, Jo’s wedding dress would soon turn red from blood and they wouldn’t even make it to the “I dos.”
10. Jo Was Actually Pregnant With Twins, Who Found Their Way Into Caroline’s Womb
Before the wedding, Jo had become pregnant with Alaric’s twins. During the ceremony, herself along with her family, was massacred. Before everyone died, a spell was chanted to save the spirits of her unborn babies. Without Caroline Forbe’s (Candice King) knowledge, these fetuses magically found their way into her womb, making her a default vampire surrogate.
11. Caroline And Alaric Had A Big Happy Family, But Alaric Is Now A Loner Daddy
During Stephan’s prolongated absence, Caroline and Alaric grew closer while bonding over the twins. Taking on the role as parents, they eventually became a couple (but didn’t sleep in the same bed).
They lived semi-normal lives for a while until the Salvatores found their way back into their perfect little pretend family. With the help of complicated circumstances, Caroline realized she never truly loved Ric, leaving him alone to father the twins.
Are you happy that Ric has chosen a “normal” path, or would you rather see him kick some vampire A$$?
