Out of all of the villains in contemporary popular fiction, Lord Voldemort is undoubtedly the name that comes up on every list. Yet, those casting a glance at the entire Harry Potter series will also agree that another character could potentially rival the Dark Lord’s barbarity.
Bellatrix Lestrange is in the entire storyline. However how much do you really know about one of the most prominent members of the House of Black? Familiarize yourself with the following 11 facts below:
Everything You Need To Know About Bellatrix Lestrange:
1. Her family is one of the Sacred Twenty Eight
According to the author of the Pure-Blood Directory (widely believed to have been written by Cantankerus Nott), the Black family is one of the 28 British families that were still “truly pure-blood” by the 1930s.
Others include the Weasleys, the Abbots, the Longbottoms, the Yaxleys, the Slughorns, the Malfoys, amongst many others.
2. Bellatrix’s wand is described by Ollivander as ‘unyielding’
It is made from 12¾” walnut wood, with a dragon heartstring core.
3. Helena Bonham Carter wasn’t the first choice to play Bellatrix
In fact, actress Helen McCrory was going to play the role but dropped out due to her pregnancy. Ironically, shortly after filming for Order of the Phoenix ended, Bonham Carter found out she was also pregnant.
McCrory was eventually cast as Bellatrix’s sister Narcissa.
4. Kreacher is very fond of Bellatrix
Unlike Sirius, who wasn’t very nice to the Black family house-elf, Bellatrix and Narcissa are kind to him.
Before he officially moved over to Harry’s possession after Sirius died, his obsession with Bellatrix went as far as keeping a picture of her in his sleeping area at 12 Gimmauld Place, which he attempted to repair with Spellotape.
5. She was sent to Azkaban for the torture of Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom
At the end of the First Wizarding War, Bellatrix, Rodolphus Lestrange (her husband), Rabastan Lestrange (her brother-in-law) and Barty Crouch Jr took part in the torture of Neville’s parents, driving them insane and banishing them to St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
Bellatrix and her accomplices were sentenced to life imprisonment for the terrible act.
6. In the book, an unnamed spell cast by Bellatrix throws Sirius Black through the veil
This occurs in the chapter named Battle of the Department of Mysteries. In the movie version however, Bellatrix casts a Killing Curse and he dies before he drifts off into the Death Chamber.
7. Bellatrix’s marriage to Rodolphus is not out of love
While Narcissa and Andromeda (Tonks) often appear alongside their husbands and speak affectionately of them, Bellatrix displays no affection for hers. She never even mentions him in conversations.
8. Bellatrix often describes herself as Voldemort’s most loyal follower
Addressing the Dark Lord, she often speaks in a romantic manner. However, he is never capable or willing to return her passionate feelings, although he does hold a great amount of respect for her. Alongside many other telling moments, her obsession with Lord Voldemort is made very obvious during a meeting at J. K. Rowling writes:
“She sat beside her sister, as unlike her in looks, with her dark hair and heavily lidded eyes, as she was in bearing and demeanour; where Narcissa sat rigid and impassive, Bellatrix leaned toward Voldemort, for mere words could not demonstrate her longing for closeness.”
Yet, there are time when he does express his affection, however mild it may be. During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, Bellatrix is the only Death Eater who he takes the time to help. He grabs her just before he Apparates away after being seen by the public. The remaining Death Eaters are captured by the Aurors.
9. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince sees Bellatrix at the astronomy tower when Dumbledore is killed
In the books though, this does not occur. Neither does she appear at events during the Christmas holidays at the Burrow, when it is set alight by Death Eaters.
10. She’s highly adept at using non-verbal magic
There are many instances when she uses her deadly skills during the books. For example, she kills a fox on the way to Spinner’s End in 1996, duels with Molly Weasley without mentioning a single spell. Moreover, in the Atrium in the Ministry of Magic, she curses Harry without uttering a single word. Undeniably, she is one of the most powerful witches in the series.
11. Bellatrix was triumphantly killed by Molly Weasley at the Battle of Hogwarts
The description of her demise reads:
“Molly’s curse soared beneath Bellatrix’s outstretched arm and hit her squarely in the chest, directly over her heart. Bellatrix’s gloating smile froze, her eyes seemed to bulge: for the tiniest space of time she knew what had happened, and then she toppled, and the watching crowd roared, and Voldemort screamed.”
