So much news is flooding the internet today from the press visit to the London-based set of . So. much. news. you guys. But a little tidbit dropped today that hints at a crossover of sorts between the Justice League and in the form of a fan favorite from the latter signing up to be part of the DC Extended Universe.
Who is that fan favorite? None other than Kristofer Hivju, a.k.a. Tormund Giantsbane, a.k.a. one half of everyone’s favorite ship from this season (even if Brienne wanted none of it).
As you probably already know, we’re getting our first look at Atlantis not in the standalone film, but in Justice League. When Aquaman (Jason Momoa) appears to fight alongside the Justice League, we’ll be introduced to other Atlanteans in present day, including Mera (Amber Heard) and Vulko (Willem Dafoe). Hivju has been added to the cast, as well, and though we don’t yet have an official name for his character, he’ll be Atlantean royalty from days long since passed.
To give you an idea of how the Atlanteans will be positioned in Justice League, here’s a behind-the-scenes featurette with Zack Snyder and Momoa talking about Atlantis and the character of Aquaman:
While Hivju’s character certainly won’t have as much screen time as Momoa, or even Heard and Dafoe, his role will be a pivotal one, and it confirms all those Mother Box rumors that were swirling a few months ago. Apparently, there will be a flashback in Justice League, one that takes us back thousands of years to when the three Mother Boxes were given to the three races: Atlanteans, Amazonians, and humans. Hivju’s ancient royal is the character entrusted to receive the Mother Box on behalf of the Atlanteans and keep it safe.
So if his role is pivotal, how does it tie into the larger plot? Fast-forward to the present day and we find Steppenwolf and his not-so-merry Parademons coming to Earth to search for the Mother Boxes in a storyline that seems, at least on the surface, an awful lot like DC’s version of the Tesseract/Loki/Chitauri plot that was the overarching story of Marvel’s Phase 1. McGuffins for everyone! Regardless, it will be awesome to see Hivju going from playing a Wildling to an Atlantean.
Like I said, there’s a ton of news coming out today about Justice League, and our own Kit Simpson Browne was there covering it all. If you missed any of it, you can catch up below:
