Even though , fans of the magical world he lives in shouldn’t have too much to worry about. Not only has , but a sequel to the upcoming film has been officially announced for November 16, 2018, just a few weeks after for the first movie.
We’ve known for a while now that Rowling had already completed a script for the sequel, as studio executives always planned to craft a trilogy out of this spin-off franchise. That said, the timing of the announcement is somewhat surprising. The release of a new Harry Potter film is basically the equivalent of Warner Bros. casting money-making spells that no one else knows the secrets to, yet it’s still a bold move to announce an official release date to the sequel before the first movie is even released.
After all, Warner Bros. also revealed that both and a solo movie were in the works, long before David Ayer’s film hit cinemas. Following , we have a feeling they may be questioning that decision.
Reports confirm that director David Yates will return for the sequel to Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, suggesting that Warner Bros. have huge faith in their product and the filmmaker’s past experience with the franchise. If the film performs as well as the studio hopes, there’s a strong chance that Yates will also be joined by returning cast members, such as Eddie Redmayne, Colin Farrell and Ezra Miller.
Obviously, plot details are almost non-existent as the first film, hasn’t even been released yet — not to mention the fact that Rowling is notoriously secretive about her work. However, an official statement from Warner Bros. revealed that the movie;
“…moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt and our other heroes have to decide on their allegiances.”
With little else to go on, all we can assume is that Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2 will become a hybrid of Pokemon and Captain America: Civil War, where Redmayne’s inability to catch all of the fantastic beasts will lead to fights between him and other trai — magicians, determined to become the best there ever was.
Joking aside, it’s hard not to feel somewhat sceptical of early announcements such as these. We’ve known for years that Hollywood is becoming increasingly driven by sequels in place of original content, but now it feels like almost every franchise exists simply to set up another franchise without the need to tell one complete and effective story.
However, there’s still a good chance that both Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and the 2018 sequel will still be successful, thanks largely to the input of Harry Potter stalwarts Rowling and Yates who have both steered us well in the past.
If all else fails, fans can still enjoy the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the not too distant future. In the meantime, check out our guide to everything we know about Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, simply by clicking play below.
