The concluding episodes of Game of Thrones are nigh, and while it’s bittersweet to only get three more precious episodes of what is always too short a season, there isn’t a Throner out there who isn’t curious to know how it’ll wrap up. So let the rabid theorizing begin, friends! HBO has officially released the titles of the last two episodes of this season — we already knew this weekend’s episode is titled “No One” — and they are quite tantalizing.
Episode 9’s squeal-inducing title is “Battle of the Bastards,” which one can only assume refers to Jon Snow’s long-awaited arrival (hopefully with a decent army in tow) at Winterfell to take back his childhood home from fellow . This hotly anticipated showdown will hopefully result in the death of Game of Thrones’ most hated character (a slow death, please, HBO).
The final episode is titled “The Winds of Winter,” which harkens directly from the title of George R. R. Martin’s forthcoming sixth novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. Now we’ll have to guess just how much the events of the finale will align with Martin’s novel.
Episode 9 airs June 19 and the finale will be June 26, with an epic 69-minute run time, making it the longest GoT episode to date. Both installments are directed by Miguel Sapochnik, who directed last year’s episode “Hardhome.”
HBO’s description for this Sunday’s “No One” is as follows:
While Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) weighs his options, Cersei (Lena Headey) answers a request. Tyrion’s (Peter Dinklage) plans bear fruit. Arya (Maisie Williams) faces a new test. Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss; directed by Mark Mylod.
HBO does love its vague episode descriptions, but with these names finally revealed, it seems likely our favorite bastard will take back the North in the name of House Stark — and hopefully without owing Littlefinger too many favors. Perhaps then all of Westeros will start to take seriously that winter isn’t just coming, it’s pretty much here.
What do you think these titles reveal about the plotlines of the final two Season 6 Game of Thrones episodes?
