We’re less than a week away from the explosive premiere of AMC’s new comic book adaptation series Preacher, based upon the groundbreaking ’90s graphic novel of the same name by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. The series follows Dominic Cooper’s Jesse Custer, a disillusioned preacher in possession of a suitcase of demons and childhood trauma whose spiralling life is changed forever when he’s possessed by a powerful entity named Genesis — the product of a union between angel and demon.
Preacher #1: The origin of Genesis
But the good news is, you don’t have to wait until Sunday to get your first peek at the pilot episode, as AMC just released the first four minutes online for all to see. Check it out below!Appetite whet yet? There’s actually a lot of interesting stuff in this short intro — not least of all a nod towards one of the big characters who doesn’t appear to be appearing in the show at all. Let’s take a look. The Word of God!
Just like in the books, Genesis bursts through the door of a church and into the body of the preaching Reverend. Genesis imbues its host with the a power dubbed “The Word of God” — which causes all commands spoken in the Word to be obeyed by those who hear it — and it crashes through the door immediately after that phrase is spoken.
Preacher #1: Jesse encounters Genesis
Unlike the books it’s not Jesse who gets it first, but an unnamed preacher in Africa who promptly explodes — his congregation gets off better than Jesse’s did though. Trust us, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the manic violence you can expect from the show.
Remember that childhood trauma we mentioned? The man is the flashback snippet seen in Jesse’s dream before he awakens is indeed his father, John Custer.Unlike his graphic novel counterpart, Jesse’s father appears to be a Reverend himself, and a lot more clean cut looking. The kneeling on the ground and what happens after though, that’s taken straight from the books. But we won’t spoil that for you.Saint of Killers
The Saint of Killers appears on the Whiskey bottle
If you’ve read the graphic novels you’ll probably immediately recognize the silhouette on the bottle of Ratwater Whiskey. The Saint of Killers, the Angel of Death with a distinctly John Wayne feel about him. Ratwater is the name of the town which features in the Saint of Killers’ tragic and brutal origin story, so keep an eye out for more foreshadowing regarding this formidable character.Time of the Preacher
The music that plays while Jesse peels himself out of bed — “Time Of The Preacher” by Willie Nelson — is the same used in the opening panels of Preacher Chapter 1. Time Of The Preacher is also the name of the opening chapter, so it’s another nice little nod to the source material.Suit Up, Cowboy
The metal collar tips that we see emphasized while Jesse is doing up his shirt are another nod to books, as he wears these distinctive tips on his shirt throughout the story, adding to his Lone Ranger styling. In the books though he doesn’t start wearing them until after he’s possessed by Genesis, and so they serve as a visual indicator of his change of attitude. His ex-girlfriend Tulip (portrayed in the show by Ruth Negga) purchases them for him at a leather goods shop when they go on the run, but it looks like she can save her money this time around.Preacher, Episode 1 airs Sunday, May 22, 2016 on AMC.What was your favorite part of the Preacher pilot opening?
