If you’ve noticed a change in atmosphere recently, don’t be surprised. One of the Dark Side’s most powerful practitioners, Darth Vader, is only days away from making a long awaited appearance in a for Rogue One. It is, after all, his destiny.
The iconic Sith Lord has been one of the biggest talking points surrounding this year’s spinoff, with lots of speculation on whether he would be involved, . Considering events at the end of Rogue One lead directly to the beginning of A New Hope (1977), including one of cinema’s most recognizable villains was an opportunity too good to turn down.
Exploring A Darker Tone
Although the force-manipulating evil genius is firmly fossilized into Star Wars folklore, all the signs suggest that Rogue One is going to offer so closely associated with the franchise. Much like rebellious pilots curiously whizzing through the galaxy, the film will explore new territory, capitilizing on its distinction from the main franchise.
Rogue One appears to navigate itself, fittingly, closer to the dark side itself. Although Vader’s role is said to be nothing more than a cameo — with — he will still have a huge impact on the narrative. According to EW, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said Vader would appear:
It’s an interesting challenge for director Gareth Edwards. Although the film will stand-alone in its own right — focusing on a The Rebel Alliance’s mission to steal the plans to the Death Star — events will lead up to moments away from the beginning of A New Hope. But its individuality offers more room to experiment, with reports suggesting the film will resemble something of a war movie.
Despite having the word “war” in the name, the undercurrent of George Lucas’ films has always been fairly lighthearted, very rarely showing blood or serious gore, and offering family-friendly depictions of good versus evil. In Rogue One, as well as Vader’s shiny helmet looming forebodingly, the tone is said to be much darker. There were even rumors that scenes involving the Sith Lord because they were too brutal.
A Collection Of Intergalactic Antiheroes
Furthermore, details on the characters involved paint a flawed picture; unlike protagonists such as Luke Skywalker, Rey or Finn, here are a collection of heroes who appear a little more gritty and rough around the edges. Even leading fighter Jyn Erso is a nonconforming live-wire, a former delinquent with a “checkered past.”
In some ways, Rogue One appears to be an antihero story, set within the Star Wars universe. The interconnectedness of the narratives, but distinct separation will give the movie room to breathe in its own right, offering fans something different. Now we only have a few days to go until we get our first peak at Darth Vader since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. The Dark Side is coming.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is released on December 14, 2016.
