First-Look Spoilers: Barry Battles Zoom In DC Comics’ ‘The Flash: Rebirth’ #1

A ton of visual spoilers ahead for The Flash: Rebirth #1.

As DC Comics launches its much-hyped Rebirth saga, The Flash: Rebirth #1 hits stands today, and if you haven’t been lucky enough to get your paws on the first issue yet, you’ll know that the Rebirth one-shot was just the beginning for Barry.

The issue begins with a scenario that will be very familiar both to readers of the comics and viewers of the CW’s TV show. At a crime scene on a thundery night, the Central City PD stand over the body of a woman seemingly murdered by her husband…

From the very first panel it’s apparent that artist Carmine Di Giandomenico (Avengers: Millennium, All-New X-Factor) has done an absolutely sterling job creating an instantly recognisable and evocative Central City for Barry’s misadventures.

The mysterious death of Mrs. Macy draws obvious parallels with Barry’s own backstory, but he deftly deflects any suggestion that the case is too close to home for him to work his forensic magic.

From this moment the breakneck pace of both the TV show and previous Flash comics kicks the narrative into gear, as the brooding ‘Gotham filter’ makes way for a splash of color and Barry finds himself drawn into a vision, face to face once again with a very familiar speedster…

The text placement on some of the panels can take some getting used to, but overall there’s an easy rhythm to the pages that makes reading this Flash adventure a pleasure, even if Josh Williamson’s story doesn’t exactly break new ground.

Of course, anyone who’s read the Rebirth one-shot will know that The Flash is going to be pretty much crucial to making sense of the way in which , so this issue really is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Flash: Rebirth #1 is out Wednesday, June 8, along with Aquaman: Rebirth #1 and Wonder Woman: Rebirth #1 — .
