In this action-drama, Matthew McConaughey portrays the true story of Newton Knight, a poor Southern farmer during the American Civil War who becomes an outlaw. Enlisted in the Confederate army, a change of heart combined with the realization that he is risking his life for others to stay rich, leads him to live as a deserter — a path punishable by death.
The farmer convinces his fellow patriots to join him in his uprising against the Confederacy. Recruiting runaway slaves, women, and even children, Knight leads his armed rebellion of 250 to safety, doing whatever is necessary to survive. Finding their way to Jones County, Mississippi, this mixed-race community establishes the estate as a free land for all. There, they secede and create the Free State of Jones.
Written in part by Leonard Hartman, Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) has directed his own screenplay, thus paying tribute to the legendary deserter.
