There are many times in life when you just need to let it go, especially when you’ve been , jeered at and pelted with excrement, your , even your thinks you’re a bit much, and your only friend is a giant zombie rapist.
Fans of Game of Thrones know , and that’s what makes this so rewarding. It may be a simple edit — a portion of the Game of Thrones with Idina Menzel’s ‘Let it Go’ added on — but it’s certainly satisfying.
One of reasons people loved ‘Let it Go’ so much as a song is that it’s so applicable to different situtations. Whatever you’re struggling with, whatever new you you’re trying to be, letting it go and leaving the past behind you is great advice. Still, this song does seem particularly pertinent to Cersei’s situation…
”A kingdom of isolation and it looks like I’m the Queen”
Cersei is the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, but at what price? Only Jaime loves her now, and he looked pretty scared of her when she took the Iron Throne. Cersei has always ruled by fear, rather than loyalty and now she has a kingdom, but also total isolation from anyone who ever loved her.
”Conceal, don’t feel, don’t let them know… Well now they know”
In those few moments before the wildfire massacre in the Great Sept of Baelor, Cersei’s doubters and tormentors — Margaery, The High Sparrow, Kevan Lannister — all knew the full force of her power.
”Turn away and slam the door”
Lock Septa Unella in with The Mountain, turn away and slam the door. SHAME!
”Some distance makes everything seem small”
Tucked up safely in the Red Keep in her , even the gigantic explosion in the Sept looks small. Those she hated are dead, and in death they seem very small.
”The fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all”
Cersei has always been terrified of that said that a younger, more beautiful Queen would take from her everything she held dear. Now that Margaery is dead, Cersei’s pretty sure she’s prevented that prophecy from coming true (obviously she underestimates Sansa and Daenerys)!
”No right, no wrong, no rules for me, I’m free!”
Yup. Cersei went where even Mad King Aerys never went and lit a stash of wildfire underneath King’s Landing. The High Sparrow was a horrible extremist criminal, but nobody else in the Sept deserved to die, especially not Margaery Tyrell. Cersei certainly goes full Elsa in the line:
”It’s time to see what I can do, to test the limits and break through”
”Let it go, let it go, you’ll never see me cry”
Cersei broke in public before, crying when she saw her son, Joffrey, poisoned at the Purple Wedding, and again on her humiliating walk of atonement. Now she’s in a position of ultimate power, and more importantly, her children are dead: what could make her cry now? Never again.
”I don’t care what they’re going to say”
Cersei and Jaime’s was the cause of the entire war after King Robert’s death, but who’s going to stop Cersei ? The Targaryens happily boned each other silly in recent times — Daenerys herself is the product of compound incest between Mad King Aerys and his sister wife, Rhaella Targaryen — so what bigger middle finger to the Seven Kingdoms than for Cersei to marry Jaime now she’s Queen?
”Let the storm rage on”
There are many passages in the Game of Thrones books describing how empty Cersei felt when she was forced to ”be the good girl you always have to be” and let her drunken husband enter her. Robert was a Baratheon, the house at Storm’s End, and Storm is the Bastard name of the King and the Stormlands. This is fitting for Cersei as she let the Baratheons ‘rage on’ — they fought it out between each other, and now they’re all dead.
The Elsa/Cersei parallel holds up quite nicely, right? Although if Cersei lives long enough to see the White Walkers break through The Wall, the cold is gonna really, really bother her anyway.
Which ‘Let it Go’ line do you find particularly suitable for Cersei?
