As the old saying goes, you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family. Which is kinda inconvenient for Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora; she wouldn’t have chosen to be raised by , or chosen an intergalactic and potential life-threatening sibling rivalry.
Thanos took self imposed custody of Gamora after he killed her parents, but although conditioned as a deadly assassin, she rebelled upon hearing of Thanos’ desire to destroy the planet Xandar. However, her clearly didn’t share the same view, and during the first movie, the two characters fought violently against each other.
But at least she has made the right choices when forming new friendships, joining the team of unlikely heroes with Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Baby Groot, in their mission to protect the galaxy from evil threats.
A “Resentful And Bitter” Addition To The Team
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is approaching at the speed of light, and for Gamora, the two worlds of friends and family are set to collide, as Nebula will join the Guardians, possibly with drastic consequences. In an interview with IGN, actress Zoe Saldana discussed how this will change the relationship between her character and Nebula, who is now joining the light side. She said:
“You’ll begin to get a glimpse of how terrible life must have been like to grow up with a crazy stepfather through Nebula. Nebula is still in that teen-y, f*cking hateful sh*t. She’s just resentful and bitter. Gamora, everything she does is trying to gain redemption for what she’d done before. That’s where you’re going to find her and then, obviously, their relationship is very volatile.”
So it looks like James Gunn’s movie will explore the backstory to these characters a little more, as well as exploring how the pair can overcome any differences for the greater good. They’ll also explore the impact being raised by Thanos has had on the pair, although in fairness it doesn’t take Freud to work out that they’re both a little damaged thanks to their childhood.
The New Guardians Of The Galaxy
As well as Nebula’s defection, when she joins the team. The former Avenger has a colorful history in the comic books, a highly trained martial artist often bravely battles opponents who are seemingly stronger than her, with great impact. Heck, she has even defeated Captain America.
Salanda added that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will start “somewhere very crazy,” so with that in mind let’s take a look at what these new recruits will add to the team. Think of it as a superhero resume, if you like. Do they have what it takes?
The Resume Of: Nebula
Special powers: Gifted intellect, armed/unarmed combat, wrist blasters (!).
As we now know, Nebula will be joining her step-sister’s valiant effort to tackle the bad guys in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s universe. She’s certainly a character you’d want on your side in a fight, having viciously clashed with Gamora, going as far as destroying her step-sister’s ship, resulting in the heroic Star-Lord moment below:
In the comic book world, she made her debut in The Avengers #257 in 1985, originally as an intergalactic pirate working for Thanos. As a frequent enemy of the Avengers, she also encountered the Silver Surfer and massacred the inhabitants of Xander.
As well as wrist blasters that can turn a human into ash in the blink of an eye, she also has the ability to disguise herself and change appearance. Oh, and she once stole the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos, which gave her god-like superpowers. Basically, she means business.
But how will she turn from fierce villain to an ally of the Guardians? Well, in the comics she eventually mended broken bridges with her step-sister when she signed on to the Graces, a group of female warriors created by Gamora herself. That doesn’t mean things will go swimmingly, though. Expect the two siblings to clash strongly.
The Resume Of: Mantis
Special powers: Trained grandmistress of martial arts, spotted weakness in opponents, can control autonomic bodily functions, telepathy
Mantis will certainly have a lot to offer the team, with a peculiar mix of powers that can make her a deadly force. The autonomic control, as mentioned above, can also help her control bleeding and consequently increases her healing power.
Her high levels of combat skills, combined with her telepathic ability, gives her the useful ability of being able to pinpoint the weakness in her opponent. Perhaps one of her most impressive feats was utilizing this skill to land a knock-out blow on the God of thunder, Thor.
This also won’t be the first time Mantis head joined a team led by Star-Lord. In the 2007 miniseries, Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord, she is discovered by Peter Quill in a Kree Prison, and is then recruited for a mission to counter the Phalax invasion.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is released on May 5, 2017.
Do you think Nebula and Mantis will make good additions to the team?
