Genesis Is Coming! How Does The ‘Preacher’ Cast Measure Up To The Comic Books?

It feels strange to be writing this, but it’s nearly time for the series debut of Preacher, a mini-series based upon Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s groundbreaking ’90s graphic novel of the same name.Preacher tells the strange and brutal tale of Jesse Custer, a hard drinking, hard fighting Reverend in the midst of a crisis of faith and carrying enough emotional baggage to sink the Titanic. When he’s possessed by the entity known as Genesis — the product of a forbidden union between Angel and Demon — he’s imbued with a mysterious power and thrown headlong into the search for God, joined by his gunslinging ex-girlfriend Tulip O’Hare, and a blood and beer-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy.

But Jesse isn’t searching for salvation, he’s looking to give God a good kicking for abandoning humanity, and along the way he’ll face Angels, irate police officers, the Saint of Killers, a mysterious and powerful society known as the Grail, and his own brutal family history. Check out the shiny new trailer below! The first episode of the AMC series — developed by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin — lands May 22, 2016, so now is the time to get up to speed. Who are our cast members and characters, and how do they compare to their graphic novel counterparts?Jesse Custer — Dominic Cooper

Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double) takes the lead as Reverend Jesse Custer. Don’t let the dog collar fool you — this chain-smoking, hard drinking Reverend in possession of the Word of God won’t hesitate to put you through a wall if you piss him off, or command you to literally “go fuck yourself.” Just ask Hugo Root about that one.Tulip O’Hare — Ruth Negga

Ruth Negga (Breakfast on Pluto) is the sometime hitman Tulip O’Hare, Jesse’s gunslinging ex-girlfriend and love of his life. After being left by Jesse under mysterious circumstances years before, she stumbles upon his ruined church after a hit gone wrong, and what she finds there will change her life forever.
Cassidy — Joseph Gilgun

Joseph Gilgun (Misfits) is the 100-year-old Irish vampire Cassidy who stumbles across Tulip and subsequently Jesse in the comic books. With a sense of humor and rebellious streak a mile wide, he finds himself torn between his kinship with Jesse and his affections for Tulip, not to mention the constant nagging in the back of his throat for fresh blood.
Hugo Root — W. Earl Brown

W. Earl Brown (There’s Something About Mary) will portray the racist redneck and conspiracy theorist Sheriff of Annville, Hugo Root. Hugo Root doesn’t have that long lasting of a role in the comics due to an unfortunately phrased command from Jesse Custer, but he’ll be a constant presence in the show, since W. Earl Brown is set to appear in all 10 episodes.
Arseface — Ian Colletti

Ian Colletti (Rake) is one of the stranger characters from Preacher: “Arseface.” He is Hugo Root’s son, who was disfigured when he tried to emulate the suicide of his hero, Kurt Cobain, by shooting himself in the face. In the comics, he sets out for revenge against Jesse, but ends up becoming a pop music sensation instead.
Fiore & DeBlanc — Tom Brooke & Anatol Yusef

Tom Brooke (Game of Thrones) and Anatol Yusef (Boardwalk Empire) are Fiore and DeBlanc, two minor characters from the comics. Fiore and DeBlanc are Angels of the Adephi who are sent to Earth to retrieve Genesis and subdue Jesse, but pretty much get their asses handed to them constantly along the way.Odin Quincannon — Jackie Earle Haley

Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) is Odin Quincannon — a villainous character who doesn’t show up in the comics until much later in the story. Quincannon is the ruthless, racist and sexually perverted owner of a meat-processing plant near the town of Salvation, of which Jesse eventually becomes Sheriff. He clashes with Jesse over his refusal to let Quincannon and his employees run roughshod over Salvation, and proves a devious, if ultimately ineffective, enemy.
