This Friday, it is International Fairy Day! A time for magical creatures to emerge from the undergrowth and for all of us to appreciate these delicate beauties hiding in the supernatural world.
Over the centuries, fairies have appeared in all cultures spanning the globe, injecting mysticism and mischief into our imaginations. So, in celebration of this very special day, let’s look back at some of the most notable live-action little ladies we have encountered on the big screen. Here are five of our favorite:
1. Tinker Bell in Hook
Actress: Julia Roberts
What is perhaps my ultimate favorite childhood movie, Hook really is a whirlwind of magic and fantasy. An adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s classic novel about a boy who refuses to grow up, it stars the legendary Robin Williams as Pan and a spunky Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell.
2. The Fairy Godmother in Cinderella
Actress: Helena Bonham Carter
While we all know and love the Disney version of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, in the live-adaptation of the classic tale, British actress Helena Bonham Carter did a pretty good job of transforming Cinders into the belle of the ball. Watch her performance here:
3. Maleficent in Maleficent
Actress: Angelina Jolie
Although many mistake Jolie’s character for being an evil witch, the true story revealed at the heart of Maleficent is that she is actually a fairy that lost her wings. Dark and brooding, the fantasy film turns everything we know about the one behind Sleeping Beauty’s curse on it’s head. A must-watch, if not merely to cast a glance at Angie’s epic cheekbones.
We can’t wait until
4. Tinker Bell in Peter Pan
Actress: Ludivine Sagnier
Although many regard Julie Roberts as the original live-action Tink, Ludivine Sagnier’s interpretation should also be mentioned. Fiercely loyal and with a crazy hair style to boot, she’s by the far the most hip Tinker Bell adaptation around.
5. Lucinda in Ella Enchanted
Actress: Vivica A. Fox
Sassy and essentially useless, Vivica A. Fox’s magic is certainly not the kind you want bestowed upon yourself, or anyone you know for that matter. In fact, she’s really quite a terrible excuse for a fairy. I mean, do you remember what happens when she places an ‘obedience curse’ on poor Ella?
Yet, for all of her stubbornness and lack of magical ability, you gotta give it to her — her intentions are good and she is a kind soul at heart!
Can you think of any other live-action fairies in movies?
