July 31st is always an emotional occasion for Harry Potter fans. It is, of course, the birthday of the Boy Who Lived himself — a time which fills us with nostalgia every year.
This year, July 31st was especially important. After nine years, the master story teller J.K Rowling released the . For Harry Potter fans around the world, this occasion was meant to be a day of pure nostalgia and wonder as we delve, once again, into the thrilling life of Harry Potter. But there was a storm cloud brewing on the horizon…
The magical mood of the day was thoroughly dampened as fans around the world grieved at the news that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will, in fact, be the last time we will get to enjoy the antics of Harry Potter and his crew. Yesterday, at the ever anticipated opening night of the play (which preceded the world wide release of the script),
“[Harry] goes on a very big journey during these two plays and, then, yeah, I think we’re done. This is the next generation, you know. So, I’m thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now.”
These words are the stuff of nightmares for Harry Potter fans. Although Rowling has made similar claims in the past, it is just possible that this will be the final time we will meet our heroes. However, just because this is the final tale of Harry Potter, it does not mean this magical world is closed to us for good.
Handing Over to the Next Generation
Today fans will raise their wands in sorrow and respect to the end of a magical era — but I believe we are ushering in another more unknown epoch. With the introduction of Albus Potter and the second generation of Weaselys and Malfoys, the next chapter of Hogwarts: A History is just waiting to be written. JK Rowling may be done with Potter himself, but there are plenty of other characters — a whole new generation of them, in fact — whose stories are just waiting to be told!
Fantastic Prequels and Where to Find Them
Also, we absolutely cannot forget the upcoming FantasticBeasts and Where to Find Them movie which looks absolutely fantastic (I’m sorry I couldn’t help myself). So although Harry may no longer be in our lives, the magic of his world will live on.
Fantastic Beasts in set in 1926 America, making it an indirect prequel of sorts to the main Harry Potter arc. If this film is a success (which, given how loyal us Potterheads are, seems likely), it could open the door to any number of new stories in the Wizarding World! In terms of prequels, fans have been begging for a Marauders movie pretty much since we first read about them; and now Rowling wants to shift her focus from Harry, now could be the perfect time!
Here is my advice to you my fellow readers. Go, pick up your copy of The Cursed Child but do not read it as if you are saying goodbye. For, although, we may never hear of any more great feats of the legendary Harry Potter, his story will continue to live on in us, the fans. We may never see the looming darkness of the Forbidden Forest, or hear the Sorting Hat’s song again, but always remember this one thing:
Will ‘Harry Potter and the Curse Child’ be the final story including Harry Potter?445 Votes
Pretty much a fan of all but if you come at me with horror I have a salt shaker and an iron rod and I’m not afraid to use them 😀
