Since his role as pirate captain Muse in Captain Phillips just three years ago, 31-year-old Barkhad has started to make his mark on the film scene. Born in the Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, Abdi and his family moved to Yemen when he was 7 years old to escape the Somali Civil War. They relocated to the states when Barkhad was 14, where he later attended Minnesota University. A relative Hollywood newcomer, Abdi made his film debut at the age of 28. At the age of 28, Barkhad Abdi wowed the film industry with his portrayal of Somali pirate leader Abduwali Muse in Captain Phillips. Based on a true story, Tom Hanks plays the titular role and captain of the ship Maersk Alabama, which is boarded by four armed pirates off the coast of the Horn of Africa. Abdi kickstarted his career, winning the BAFTA for , an Oscar nom, and various other accolades.
