In just one and a half minutes, the teaser perfectly captures most of Luke Cage’s essence: He’s a man of few words; he’s extremely powerful; but he’s not sure what to do of his strength.

The adventure starts with a very simple prompt: “You should be out there helping people.”

And the video shows this progression from a character who was trying his best to lay low, to one who finally steps in. In Jessica Jones, he started out running a bar, but now he’s got to deal with his past: As Colter told Comic Book Resources, it’s a story about facing your demons.

“He’s just got to figure out where he is now, and what he’s doing with his life because he wants to define himself as a man, define himself in society and try to deal with his own demons.”

Our hero for hire is much more fearless. He’s even a little provocative.

We’ve gone from a character hiding mysterious photos in his bathroom closet, ignoring the advantage of his unbreakable skin to make cocktails instead…

Luke Cage Is ‘A Very Nuanced Character’

Just last year, Colter was speaking to List about his take on Netflix’s new hero. As he puts it, the appeal of Luke Cage both as a character and a series is not just about him being a superhero.

“Luke Cage is a very interesting character who just happens to have super strength and unbreakable skin.”

His mysterious and captivating personality comes from a dark past and a long time spent figuring out the way he wants to live his life — this is nothing like Captain America’s big motivational speeches, or Tony Stark’s constant arguing, or Spider-Man’s blabbering. Luke Cage keeps to himself, all the while making us want to see more.

“It’s all part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but Luke Cage is a darker, grittier, more tangible character than Iron Man or Thor. He likes to keep things close to his chest, operate on the hush-hush. He has these abilities but he’s not sure how and when to use them. He’s a very nuanced character.”

The Defenders Are On Their Way

The arrival of Luke Cage in the fall means we’re edging closer to , in which we’ll see Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist team up against a greater evil. Judging from Daredevil’s mentor Stick’s warning, however, the task will be all but a piece of cake:

“You think the four of you can save New York? You can’t even save yourselves.”

The only thing we’d need now would be a connection between the MCU and Netflix’s Marvel universe. Luckily, .

Luke Cage is set to premiere September 30, 2016.
