You may want to hold off on alerting the secret society guys, the Cruel Intentions TV reboot everyone’s been whispering about may not be off the cards after all.
Joining the throng of , every fan of this ’90s classic — us included — temporarily lost their shit when back in February, joined by confirmation that Marcia fucking Brady of the Upper East Side a.k.a Kathryn Mertueil a.k.a Sarah Michelle Gellar was . And then, rumors started to circulate about the series being axed and, well, hopes were dashed.
However, it may be a little premature to call off all bets just yet.
NBC — who picked up the pilot but did not place an order to series — remains interested, continuing ongoing discussions regarding a potential summer 2017 release, and banking option extensions for everyone, including Gellar. Yet stalling much longer may not be wise for the network, as per Variety’s report Sony (the studio behind Cruel Intentions) has garnered interest from alternative streaming outlets such as Hulu and Freeform.
NBC boss Bob Greenblatt said,
“We’re still discussing it…It falls under the heading of embarrassment of riches. It’s a bit of an outlier for us. There’s no other show like it [on our schedule]. We like it, we’re still discussing it and we’re trying to figure it out.”
With Cruel Intentions creator Roger Kumble, who’s back on board to pen and produce the reboot, adding:
“The latest I’ve heard is that Sony and NBC are trying to figure this out. It feels like a long time, but it hasn’t been that long because they had the upfronts and then it was Memorial Day and everyone in the industry goes on vacation so I think they’re regrouping. What’s been great is that I’m still getting emails of support from NBC and Sony saying, ‘We’re behind this show.’”
Well let’s hope these discussions are blossoming down under as if the Twitter reaction to Gellar’s reprisal is anything to go by, the internet is in full support and I for one am 100% down for any show which revolves round Ryan Phillippe’s spawn (played by Taylor John Smith).
Should the reboot go ahead, its narrative is said to take place 20 years after the end of the original movie and will,
“Follow the beautiful and cunning Kathryn Merteuil as she vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey, the son of her brother, who was the late Sebastian Valmont, and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father’s legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power, and corruption he never could have imagined.”
Would you be pumped for a Cruel Intentions TV reboot?
