Idris Elba Surprises Fans With A ‘Dark Tower’ Teaser Image

After many, many years of languishing in development hell, the long-gestating movie adaptation of Stephen King’s series is finally charging full steam ahead. A month ago, we got our first glimpse of Idris Elba in costume as Roland of Gilead:

Pistols with the sandalwood grips? Check. Badass swagger? Check. Remembers the face of his father? Double check.

Today, Elba gave fans a gift in the form of an image tease from the film, featuring that exact line:

For those of you unfamiliar, the world of Roland of Gilead is one with tough men and tougher women, but a gunslinger carrying himself in a manner that honors his father—i.e. remembering his face—is the highest mark of a worthy gunslinger. So important is the concept that it’s the basis for the Gunslinger’s Creed, the litany by which all gunslingers live. As the true descendants of Arthur Eld (think cowboy versions of the knights of the Round Table), they are the judgment, the law, the justice, and the . The Creed is learned from childhood and passed down from gunslinger to gunslinger as a means of training and a way to clear one’s mind before battle:

I do not aim with my hand; He who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye.

I do not shoot with my hand; He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind.

I do not kill with my gun; He who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father. I kill with my heart.

Even though the movie , as a longtime fan of the Dark Tower series (seriously, I first read The Gunslinger when I was about 10 years old), I can’t say for certain that I may not squeal with excitement when I hear the Creed finally said aloud. What about you?
