It Was Time To Go Away And Grow Up A Bit: Renée Zellweger Opens Up About Her Hollywood Hiatus

In an industry where it’s all too easy to get caught up in the rat race, some celebrities are taking it upon themselves to step back. It’s been six years since Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger last appeared in a movie — essentially eons in Hollywood time — but it sounds like it’s been time well spent.

The 47-year-old actress recently graced the cover of British Vogue, and in her interviews she discusses her career, her decision to take some time to herself and her upcoming film, . In the article, she revealed that her hiatus gave her something Hollywood could not: perspective.

“I found anonymity, so I could have exchanges with people on a human level and be seen and heard, not be defined by this image that precedes me when I walk into a room. You cannot be a good storyteller if you don’t have life experiences, and you can’t relate to people.
“…I was fatigued and wasn’t taking the time I needed to recover between projects, and it caught up with me. I got sick of the sound of my own voice: it was time to go away and grow up a bit.”

After taking some highly necessary time off, she’s back in full swing and reprising her role of Bridget Jones. But she’s not stopping there, Zellweger’s next project, titled Same Kind of Different as Me, is set for a 2017 release.

Zellweger also took the opportunity to discuss her preparation for and point out the disparity between how men and women are treated in the entertainment industry:

“I put on a few pounds. I also put on some breasts and a baby bump. Bridget is a perfectly normal weight and I’ve never understood why it matters so much. No male actor would get such scrutiny if he did the same thing for a role.”

Renée Zellweger has proven that age and weight don’t matter as long as you’re happy. I think we can all agree that her break from the limelight to refocus her life was well worth it for her happiness. That being said, I’m definitely glad she’s heading back to the silver screen as the captivatingly clumsy Bridget Jones.

The full interview with Vogue will be available on newsstands starting Thursday.

Bridget Jones’s Baby will be delivered on September 16.
