Marvel’s for Thor: Ragnarok, with recent additions Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban joining Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins in the MCU sequel. And while they’re , Goldblum’s inclusion as intergalactic gamesman the Grandmaster was particularly exciting for fans.
Now, all those excited fans have a better idea of what to expect from the veteran actor in the upcoming film. In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Goldblum revealed his interpretation of the Grandmaster, which sounds totally wild.
The Grandmaster is an ancient being in the Marvel Universe, having challenged heroes and villains from across time and space to games of luck and chance. It’s a unique character concept, and Goldblum’s version of the Grandmaster sounds suitably weird. As the actor described the intergalactic being:
“He’s a hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells. I thought, ‘I can do that, I’ll bet!’ I’m working on my part every day. I’m a sponge, researching.”
Casting Jeff Goldblum as a space-faring “pleasure-seeker” in a Marvel movie sounds completely bonkers. And even better, the actor will have time to experiment with his performance during production:
“[Taika Waititi] is encouraging me to improvise and make it my own, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I hope he doesn’t throw me out on the first day!”
Goldblum also revealed that he expects to shoot for “three weeks or a month” in Brisbane, Australia. Production on Thor: Ragnarok will begin on July 4.
Thankfully, it sounds like the Grandmaster will be more than just an imposing figure in the film. Given Goldblum’s description, the Grandmaster could be a pretty comedic character, perhaps to counterbalance the addition of Cate Blanchett as the villainous Hela. Providing Goldblum the chance to stretch his acting abilities and really play with the character should add another memorable performance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
