Johnny Depp’s 6 New Upcoming Movies: From Murderous Moose To Paralytic Pirate

Johnny Depp has been criticized for his poor movie choices in the past, but with winning over some of the toughest critics last year, could the ever-popular star’s career be on the up once more?

Below are the six movies Depp is lined up to lend his famous face to over the next few years, so you can judge for yourself if he’s chosen wisely.

1. London Fields (2016)

  • Director: Mathew Cullen
  • Release Date: N/A
  • Depp’s Character: Guy Clinch

Synopsis: Depp’s first upcoming release awkwardly sees him co-starring with his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Amber Heard. The psychological thriller follows a clairvoyant who begins dating three very different men, one of whom she knows will eventually murder her.

2. Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 (2017)

  • Director: Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg
  • Release Date: 26 May 2017
  • Depp’s Character: Captain Jack Sparrow, duh!

Synopsis: Captain Jack is back and once more his plans to rule the high seas have been foiled by his nemesis Captain Salazar. In order to gain the upper hand, the madcap, rum-swilling pirate sets off on a mission to nab Neptune’s trident to gain control of the seven seas.

3. Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes (2018)

  • Director: John Stevenson
  • Release Date: January 12, 2018
  • Depp’s Character: Sherlock Gnomes

Synopsis: Starring alongside Emily Blunt and James McAvoy, this role will see Depp lending his velvety smooth voice to a gnome detective. So far, all we know is that Sherlock Gnomes is hired to get to the bottom of some mysterious garden ornament disappearances. The rest remains a mystery.

4. The Invisible Man (2018)

  • Director: Unknown
  • Release Date: 13 April 2014
  • Depp’s Character: Dr. Jack Griffin/The Invisible Man

Synopsis: So far, plot details about this movie are as elusive as the Invisible Man himself. All we know is that this movie will be based on the classic H.G. Wells novel and that the flick exists in Universal Studio’s “Monster Universe.”

Maybe some of the films in the same series such as Dracula Untold could give us an idea of the general tone:

5. Moose Jaws (No Release Date)

  • Director: Kevin Smith
  • Release Date: N/A
  • Depp’s Character: Guy Lapointe

Synopsis: So far, Depp is only rumored to return as the eccentric Canadian detective Guy Lapointe , but it seems highly likely he will return to complete Kevin Smith’s True North trilogy. The final installment is described as “Jaws, but with a moose,” which is pretty self explanatory, really.

6. The Libertine (No Release Date)

Not this Libertine...

Not this Libertine…
  • Director: Brett Ratner
  • Release Date: Unknown
  • Depp’s Character: Unknown

Synopsis: Depp has already starred in a movie entitled The Libertine (see his flowing mane above), but this is an entirely different kettle of fish. The movie is based on the Dominique Strauss-Kahn scandal where the former French politician was accused of sexually assaulting and attempting to rape a maid. Somehow this is meant to be turned into a comedy, which I hope is just a mistake on the IMDb article. The mind boggles.
