Not content to own the further reaches of the galaxy, up and coming star John Boyega turns from the stars back down to the earth in yet another epic sci-fi battle. This time he will battle Kaiju instead of Sith. Legendary pictures announced today they have cast Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega in their second installment of Pacific Rim.
Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and director of the first film, Guillermo del Toro, will produce. On Boyega’s rising star quality Parent says:
“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.”
Co-creator Del Toro also chimed in with his pleasure at the news:
“I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The ‘Pacific Rim’ universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Boyega will be playing the son of character Stacker Pentecost, played by Idris Elba in the first film. The premise revolves around huge alien creatures, Kaiju, who enter our world via a breach under the ocean. To defeat huge monsters, humans create gigantic robot-like mechas, piloted by two people via “the drift,” a mental link that connect the pilots to each other and their machine.
The first film grossed $411 million worldwide when released in 2013 and the next installment has been heavily teased and over the past few years. With this solid casting choice it looks like we’re finally getting a sense of how this next film will be.
