(Warning: The following contains multiple giant, hulking SPOILERS for next year’s Justice League movie, garnered from a recent set visit. Proceed with whatever level of Bat-like caution that suggests to you is wise…)
Now, most superhero movie Easter eggs tend to emerge within the first few days of cinematic release – having been spotted by eager fans – or, if we’re lucky, in the wake of a major trailer release. Zack Snyder, however, has seemingly opted to try something a little different with the currently-filming Justice League. Y’see, despite the film not being set for release until November 2017, , and while we were there, screened a rough-cut of a crucial scene from the movie.
And, as it happens…
That Recently Screened Scene Contained A Gloriously Unsubtle Easter Egg
One, in fact, involving none other than The Flash, as well as one of his most iconic comic-book foes.
(Note, this is where those aforementioned MAJOR SPOILERS really start to kick in…)
Y’see, the screened scene in question featured Bruce ‘Batman’ Wayne and Barry ‘The Flash’ Allen meeting for the first time, after Bruce breaks into Barry’s apartment in order to recruit him to the as-yet unformed Justice League. With the meeting being largely filled with surprisingly effective gags, it doesn’t take long for Barry to drop a fantastically fan-friendly tease.
Y’see, as we know from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Bruce knows full well that Barry has special abilities – but isn’t sure quite what they are. As such, points out to Barry that:
“I know you have abilities. I just don’t know what they are.”
To which Barry responds facetiously, and with the sort of effortless goofiness that Ezra Miller seems born to exude:
“My special skills include, uh, viola, web design, fluent in sign language – gorilla sign language.”
Which, as fans of the comic-books (or indeed CW show) will no doubt know, is most surely a nod to beloved fan-favorite (and long-time Flash foe) Gorilla Grodd, and perhaps to Gorilla City, from which Grodd originally hails.
Now, it’s probably too much to hope for that Barry has already faced the super-intelligent ape (and is thus cheekily referencing a past adventure), but it’s hard not to hope that the tease could one day translate into an actual appearance from Grodd in the DCEU (he’s already made a number of appearances on the CW’s The Flash).
After all, with Ezra Miller’s take on The Flash being far and away the most overtly comedic one we’ve yet seen in DC’s burgeoning cinematic universe – he consistently gets to be legitimately funny in Justice League, it seems – there’s always the possibility that his eventual solo movie will take a tone more similar to that of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man, thus making ‘sillier’ villains like Grodd a little more viable as supporting antagonists.
Or, in other words? I would really like to see Ezra Miller’s Flash take on a giant super-intelligent gorilla on the big screen, and I fully intend to shamelessly applaud any and all hints that such a magnificently geeky thing could one day come to pass.
Let’s make this happen, people.
(While we’re waiting, though, don’t worry: We have more news about , and )
