Season Four of Arrow saw the death of one of its originals when Laurel Lance a.k.a. The Black Canary died at the hands of Damien Darhk, dividing the fandom right down the middle. Some welcomed the character’s death, whilst others were against it (some very, very against it) indeed.
A lot of fans welcomed her death as they felt her character was boring and annoying but on the other side, fans of Laurel felt that her death was just to pave the way for ‘Olicity.’
In the middle of that fandom war, Laurel’s evil Earth-Two doppelgänger, Dinah Lance a.k.a. The Black Siren, made her way onto The Flash for one episode.
Now it seems that Katie Cassidy has signed a new contract which see her as a series regular across the three CW superhero shows – Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. The same contract has also been signed by Wentworth Miller (The Flash/Legends of Tomorrow) and John Barrowman (Arrow).
But what does this mean for Laurel? Last we saw, she was dead and buried ( ). Well, we are in the comic book world and anything is possible. Here are some of the possibilities in which we could see Lauren and The Black Canary return to our screens.
If you’ve watched The Flash, you would have seen the existence of multiple Earths and although we have seen Black Siren from Earth-2, there are still plenty of different worlds to a Laurel. If they didn’t want to go the resurrection route, this seems like the next logical path and it might not be the Laurel we have come to know but maybe something close.
The whole existence of Legends of Tomorrow is all about time travel, so it’s entirely possible that the Waverider crew could come across Laurel before her death. Having said that, it was mentioned at the end of Season One when Sara learnt of her death and she was told it wasn’t something they could do. Obviously this is something that could change, now that she is coming back, but I feel this option is less than likely.
Any or all of these three are a possibility across all three shows, especially with Sara being on Legends and Quentin on Arrow. This option though seems less likely due to the fact that it would get repetitive and boring after a while. Some fans of Arrow are already tired of the flashbacks, so having Laurel-focused ones may not be a big hit with the fans- neither might seeing a character constantly dreaming or hallucinating.
It’s the comic book world, so this option is entirely possible and we’ve seen it done already in Arrow. There happens to be this fancy spa that resurrects people, it ma be out of order at the moment but that could of course change. But having said that, we have seen it done multiple times already with Sara and Thea.
Season 3 of The Flash is heading into Flashpoint territory, based on the comic book where Barry goes back in time and saves his mother and completely changes the timeline and the lives of the DC superheroes. While Laurel might have died last season on Arrow, now that Barry has gone and played with the timeline, it’s entirely possible that we could see the repercussions stretch over to Arrow and we could get Laurel back.
During the CW DC TV Panel at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, Arrow producer Wendy Mericle revealed the new deal including when we will first see Laurel.
“We will definitely see [Katie Cassidy] in 501, and we have made a deal with her across Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, so Katie Cassidy is definitely not gone from this universe.”
