Let’s Talk Emmy Predictions 2016: Outstanding Comedy Performers!

The ballots are out and there are so many names to choose from for the “Outstanding Comedy Series” categories for performers, that it’s hard to choose a select few. Yet, I have a group of contenders that make a strong case for that Emmy. There are some familiar names, and there are some dark horses that may be in the running for the coveted title. Let’s go around the horn and talk about the categories and who my favorites are for this year’s Emmy!

1) Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

The current Champion- Jeffrey Tambor “Transparent”

There is no question that Jeffrey Tambor is still a strong favorite to take it again this year for his portrayal of Maura Pfefferman in Transparent, but there are some contenders to his title that can knock him out. Aziz Ansari (Master of None) and Anthony Anderson (Black-ish) are looking really good in the early rounds. I love Patrick Stewart’s role as Walter Blunt in Starz Blunt Talk as a surprise nominee for the fact that you have never seen the actor pull off this type of comedy before. You can never count out Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory) role as Dr. Sheldon Cooper, simply because this character has arisen to become a comedy icon. Lastly, my darkhorse here, the unlikely pick for me is Denis Leary for his portrayal as Johnny Rock in FX’s Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll. The washed up rocker comes off very familiar to anyone who enjoyed that era of hair bands, and punk rock and if you didn’t know that time, you’ll still enjoy Denis Leary’s brand of comedy made famous by his great show in the classic “Rescue Me” series. Finally, you got to love Anthony Anderson on Black-ish! What’s not to like?

2016 Final Nominee Predictions for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

  • Jeffrey Tambor/ Transparent
  • Aziz Ansari/ Master of None
  • Patrick Stewart/ Blunt Talk
  • Jim Parsons/ Big Bang Theory
  • Denis Leary / Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll
  • Anthony Anderson/ Black-ish

2) Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

The current Champion- Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (VEEP) is like 80s Mike Tyson in this category. Since her name appeared on the ballot she’s been tearing a hole in the competition, namely Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation) who isn’t in this year’s ballot. So who can challenge the mighty Selina Meyer for the throne? I like Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish) and Amy Schumer (Inside Any Schumer) to make a strong run at the throne. Lena Dunham (Girls) is also a strong name on the list. Emmy Rossum (Shameless) can also give Julia a run for her money this year, but the smart money has to be on Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) making the best challenge and maybe even breaking the winning streak Julia Louis-Dreyfus is on. Yet, my heart of heart hopes veteran actress Lily Tomlin wins this year’s Emmy for Grace and Frankie.

2016 Final Nominee Predictions for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

  • Emmy Rossum/ Shameless

3) Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

The current Champion- Tony Hale, “Veep”

I like Tony Hale’s (Veep) chances once again this year, but he is no lock for the title. The scion of Modern Family will come out swinging again this year, and I predict Jesse Tyler Ferguson will be nominated instead of Ty Burrell or Eric Stonestreet for the Emmy this year. Andre Braugher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) looks really good, as does Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). Adam Driver (Girls) will make a strong run and as for my “I wish” Emmy winner, Sam Elliott for his portrayal as Beau Bennett on Netflix’s The Ranch would be my choice!

2016 Final Nominee Predictions for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

  • Tony Hale/ Veep
  • Jesse Tyler Ferguson/ Modern Family
  • Andre Braugher/ Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Tituss Burgess/ Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
  • Adam Driver/ Girls
  • Sam Elliot / The Ranch

4) Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

The current Champion-Allison Janney “Mom”

The two-time winner Janney (Mom) is still the favorite for this year’s Emmy. Of course, I’m bias since I was a huge West Wing fan and will always have a place for her on my DVD stand. With that said, there are a few contenders that can give Allison a decent challenge this year. Julie Bowen (Modern Family) and Leslie Jones (SNL) are two of my favorites that come to mind. Mayim Bialik (Big Bang Theory) can be the surprise winner here, and there is no doubt she can win. I also have a soft spot for Swoosie Kurtz (Mike and Molly) for her work on that show. Finally, I love Jenifer Lewis’s role as Ruby on Black-ish and feel she deserves a shot at the title.

  • Allison Janney/ Mom
  • Julie Bowen/ Modern Family
  • Mayim Bialik/ Big Bang Theory
