has been and gone and broken the box office alongside our collective hearts; the titans of DC have slugged it out and bonded over the names of their mothers in ; the X-Men stopped the apocalypse in , and gave the genre a cheeky X-rated kick — but the most exciting superhero movie of the year might still be yet to arrive.
At least that’s what a number of the Doctor Strange cast members ( ) seem to think.
Mads Mikklesen — who is portraying an as-yet unknown villain in Marvel’s mystical Doctor Strange — is the latest cast member to lay praise upon the upcoming movie in a new interview with Yahoo Movies, and it’s not all that difficult to see why.
If you’ve somehow missed the trailer (or just need to watch it again, we understand) here it is below. And you .
Sadly, the trailer didn’t really give us much in the way of answers regarding who exactly Hannibal and star Mikkelsen will be portraying in Doctor Strange; and it’s not like the Sorcerer Supreme has quite as extensive or iconic rogues gallery to pick from as other Marvel heavyweights.
But after discussing the conversation turned to Mikkelsen’s villain. And though Doctor Strange EP Stephen Broussard described his character as “our main villain,” Mikkelsen believes that’s not the whole truth:
“He’s not a villain in that way – he’s a man who believes in something else than the hero. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to make the planet look wonderful or he wants to save the world as well, but he has a different way of doing it. He is the antagonist, of course, but he’s not necessarily wrong.”
This echoes what we’d heard before from Marvel’s Kevin Feige — that Mikkelsen’s character is a sorcerer who breaks off in opposition to the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). As Feige told EW:
“Mads’ character is a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect. [He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through.”
This taps into a fairly post-modern argument — that very few bad guys actually believe that what they’re doing is evil, they just have a different viewpoint of the world that conflicts with the altruism of the hero.
Marvel recently presented an excellent villain of this type in Captain America: Civil War’s Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and received high praise for his development. Could it be that they’re gunning for the same character type here?
It certainly worked for Marvel before, as did the widespread fan love for long running antagonist Loki (Tom Hiddleston), who really just needed a hug from his dad.
There’s still a while to go before we find out exactly who Mikkelsen is playing in Doctor Strange, but until then all we have is speculation. Speaking of which, .
Doctor Strange is set for a November 4, 2016 release.
