Theatrical trailer for Masterminds, the first trailer released since the film was pushed back from August, 2015, to September 30th, 2016.

Inspired by true events, a group of half-brained criminals execute an absurdly faulted heist plan. They manage the impossible and make off with $17 million in cash! When the synopsis claims the film is based on a true story, it means it. The heist went down in 1997 with the robbery of Loomis Fargo Bank in Charlotte, North Carolina. The team of thieves stole a whopping $17.3 million.

Why was an ensemble comedy such as this pushed back for over a year? Well, turns out that Relativity Media hit some financial trouble and eventually filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The film was originally put on hiatus and then straight up cancelled. The Chapter 11 must have went well, however, as Masterminds is now back on the calendar.

Though Owen Wilson looks fantastic as the character Steve, the role was actually originally pitched to .

Is it safe to assume that this comedy got the greenlight again thanks in part to the fact that it features most of the lady ? Or too much of a stretch? If you have your doubts, then explain to me why this theatrical trailer for Masterminds makes it a point to show off both Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, though the previous trailers seemed to omit these characters? And, of course, we already had Kristen Wiig. Sure, possibly a stretch, but talking about using fresh assets in the marketing material.

Considering that I have loved every trailer so far for this long-delayed comedy, it makes sense that I would like the newest iteration. Where this preview separates itself from the rest is the added focus on the character David Ghantt, played by Zach Galifianakis, recognizing him as the central protagonist in the film. Oh, and don’t forget to splash in some more Leslie Jones; who we absolutely adore at the moment.

Only one complaint. Masterminds looks like it could have greatly taken advantage of an R-rating, but instead played it safe with PG-13. This reflects in the trailers, which seem to be begging for a red band version, but without the content to qualify for one. Sigh–Opportunity missed.
