SPOILERS!!! Spoilers ahead for Game Of Thrones Season 6, Episode 3 “Oathbreaker,” as well as various fan theories involving Meera, Jon Snow, secret lineage and the fulfillment of a certain prophecy. With the alarming rate at which characters drop on Game Of Thrones, combined with their bizarre names, it can be tricky to keep track of the smaller characters that come and go. One minor character in particular, Meera Reed, might have fallen off your radar when she disappeared in Season 5. But now she’s back in Season 6, staying by Bran’s side as he studies with the Bloodraven.
Could Meera be gearing up for an even bigger part of the action this season? It’s highly possible. Here’s everything you need to know about what makes Meera so damn interesting. Background On Meera ReedWe first met Meera back in Season 3. She’s the only daughter of Howland Reed, and the older sister of Jojen Reed. Howland Reed, Lord of Graywater Watch, was one of Ned Stark’s closest friends. The two of them fought side by side in numerous battles during Robert’s Rebellion, including the Battle at the Tower of Joy.
Howland Reed and Young Ned Stark
Meera — a skilled fighter and hunter — had been her brother’s protector until his death at the hands of the White Walker army in the Season 4 finale. As Jojen died, he told his sister to stay with Bran and protect him, too. In Season 6, Episode 2, we saw Meera struggling with that decision and tempted to leave Bran and return to the world outside. However, Leaf — that green, plant-like creature belonging to the Children of the Forest — told her that Bran needed her now most of all, and she should to stay with him in the cave.
Could Love Be In The Frozen Air?While there is still some material from George R.R. Martin’s A Song Of Ice And Fire books that the series hasn’t covered, Season 6 officially surpassed the books as far as plot lines go. At the end of the last book, A Dance With Dragons, Bran and Meera were in the cave with Hodor, Leaf and the Three-Eyed Raven.
Bran and Meera
Over the course of A Storm Of Swords, Bran develops a crush on Meera, and by the end of A Dance With Dragons, he says that he thinks he loves her. We haven’t been able to see much of their relationship development in the show, due to their long absence last season. Could a romance be brewing for these two?
Meera Reed Fan TheoryWe all know all about the R+L=J fan theory (and if you don’t, you can check it out here), but what about that lesser-known equation, R+L=J+M?
John Snow and Ghost
That’s right. So, as this theory goes, Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen actually had twins. One of them was our golden boy, Jon Snow, whom Lyanna entrusted to her brother Ned to raise as his own (bastard) son. But it’s possible that there was another baby — a little girl. In order to protect the children in case their true identities were ever discovered, it makes sense that they children would be separated. And we all know Howland Reed was there at the Tower of Joy…Reddit user MikeTysonsLifeCoach makes some solid arguments both for and against this theory, based on evidence from the book and the series.
In the Pro Column, we have:
Osha and Meera
But there’s evidence against the twin theory, too:
If this theory is true, then it basically squashes any dreams we might have been harboring of Tyrion finally riding a dragon. But it’s still nice to know that Game Of Thrones and George R.R. Martin will always have the potential to shock us with surprises we’ve never suspected.Be sure to check out the trailer for next week’s episode of Game Of Thrones, Sunday on HBO.
